VW or Porsche?

Would I be correct in thinking that if the V5 says the 914 is a Porsche then it must be a USA import, if it says VW it's a European import. Is there any cars out there registered as VW/Porsche?

No not correct. Back when they were new they were many registered as a Porsche and the V5 doesn't state the model just 2 axle ridged.
The 914 was sold through Porsche dealers here in the UK. All of the registration documents of UK sold 914s I have see state Porsche.
Many imports came into the UK too in the 70s from Europe and the registration documents I have seen them mainly state Porsche not VW Porsche.
I did register my first 914 as a VW Porsche just to be different as I liked the fact that the tax disc would show the two company's. Only seen a hand full registered this way over the years.

I wouldn't use the V5 as a reliable indicator of anything!
Make / model / tyoe / engine size / colour etc etc... all V5 data is only as good as the person who (mis?)keyed the data into the system, combined with the quality of information they are looking at when they did that data input.

I sent my 912 V5C back to the DVLA to have 912 put in the 'model' section as it was blank but they just returned it the same so checked other Porsche V5C's and they all have a model number??

Reminds me of the problems I had after the DVLA had agreed to re-assign to me my car's original UK registration number after its return from Zimbabwe.

On the V5 they would not describe the car as a 911 T - because "that model name doesn't come up on our system" although they did agree to plain 911. Presumably 911 E and 911 S didn't come up on their system either?

But I would not accept "1" as being the total number of seats, including driver - did they think the car was a single seater racing car?
