Window regulators - interchangeable early/IB/coupe/targa?
Hi, my SC Targa's left side window regulator has teeth like Shane McGowan, explaining its notchy and generally crappy functioning. It is manual winding not powered.
So, I am on the search for a replacement..and am confused by on one hand there seeming to be different p/n's for different years and body styles on one hand, but on the other when advertised new at pelican/stoddard, it seems to be 'one fits all', 65-89.
Can anyone clarify, and tell me what I need? Do I need to stick to the Porsche PET p/n for a 79 targa, or are they all just the same?
Or, anyone know if the toothed bit alone is replaceable?
Thanks.

Re: Window regulators - interchangeable early/IB/coupe/targ
I think Targa mech is a parallel motion mech, as the targa window is frameless, unlike the coupe.
I have a motorised mech, not sure what side, I can take a look, LHS I think, but this may entirely different. It came from my 77 shell so about the right era.
I'll see if I can find a photo...

Hello Johnny,
They are definitely not all the same - the mounting around the winder changed at least 3 times in this era, although I think the same unit was used for both coupe and targa. (could be wrong here!)
If you can show a photo of the door frame on the inside stripped of the door card and handle then I can see if I have one that will work.

Before you remove any knuckle-flesh have you really cleaned and re-greased every part of the regulator while still in the door?
I've had hard to operate regs on both doors esp the near side.
On inspection the one plastic slider had come apart (one closest to the lock). The small C clip had come free of the groove and everything came apart.
Fixed the clip, re-assembled and re-greased everything that moves inc the quadrant teeth ( that are very pointed in the first place).
Oiled the parallelogram arm pivots (drowned them) while winding the reg up and down many times.
The difference in operation is very very marked.
Driver's side responded in the same way, but the sliders were intact.

Thanks folks, I will get a pic taken tonight. It is all removed from the car already..pretty sure it is the teeth as the movement is quite smooth until the last quarter - which is where the teeth are rounded and worn, not sharp and equilateral like the rest.

Re: Window regulators - interchangeable early/IB/coupe/targ
Right then..decided to go for an austerity solution..welded new metal to the tips of the worn teeth, and ground them back into a nice pyramid shape with a plasma disc. Result? Lovely smooth winding.
One more problem solved. Onwards!
