OT: T25 camper

There was some chat recently about VW T25 vans prompted by the boss' recent purchase.

If anyone is on the look out for one, my brother has put his very original, low miles "coffee & cream" RHD Devon on the market.

Was mag featured earlier this year and is well looked after, totally solid and honest.

The colour will not appeal to all but there isn't many around in this condition.

Very nice, but surely any potential buyer would want to know what engine and how many berths? Arousing our beloved brick from hibernation this week, hoping the low oil pressure has mended itself over winter! GLWTS. W

It's got a 2.0l type 4 & I guess, 4 berth (has the bed in the roof for the kids).

I spent a very cold October half term holiday with chicken pox in one of those. Not sure how 007 it was but our Devon Moonraker was 4 berth with a 2 litre air cooled flat 4

I'm still trying to work out a cost effective camper/race trailer towing solution. Would it tow a race trailer?

Our 2.1 T25 tows Wasp with ease, the Nash is a bit heavier, prob a tonne on occasion and the van feels it a bit, but still no problem at 65-70 on the motorway. It is comfortable, and very stable. A bit thirsty, but hey! However beware of remanufacured engines, my direct experience is that the exchange unit is well down on the original, which at 150,000 miles still showed 110 bhp on a rolling road (112 bhp when new). This is due, i suspect, to poor pattern parts esp. heads and (guessing here) low comp US spec pistons. I have now sourced and have commissioned a s/h VW motor rebuild to euro stock. It is worth remembering that for many people these are a whole hobby though, so you need to track down a good one. I would only part with it for a T4 or T5, but the cost would severely curtail the motorsport! W

The 2.0 air-cooled type 4 motor is designed, like the original Beetle engine, to go flat out all day. But with only 70 BHP & 100 lb/ft torque its going to be hard work pulling a trailer. It can be done but add and external oil cooler and extended sump to keep the oil temp down. Check the valve clearances every 3000 miles. If they have tightened up look out for valve seat recession.

I drove thousands of miles in the 70's and 80's with a couple of 2 litre Type 4 engined Bay window campers, towing first our Autocross Beetle, then 914 and 911's. I rebuilt both engines to near 914 spec, and they were perfectly capable of towing, although they did concentrate the mind in cross-winds...........
We had a T25 for a short time belonging to our daughter, not a patch on the old Type 2 in my opinion......
In today's world, if I were you I would look for a good T4. It ought to be more reliable, definitely a lot more stable towing, better brakes, a decent heater and demister etc etc. Our old T4 has earned its keep many times over, still keeps going, and tows perfectly.

Just don't ask it to tow a trailer out of a damp grassy paddock - that's when I need my old Westy back!
