Re: 8 pin CDI box No B227020061 - FOR WHAT MODEL ? 917 !!!??
The 8 pin boxes added electronic rev limiting which relies on counting the distributor pulses and knowing the number of cylinders. Some boxes had a cylinder number adjuster in the side.
I don't know about the part number but it would be possible to work out if the box was fitted to a 12 cylinder engine provided that the box works.
I could do this for you if you like.
Got a picture?

It says 'Bosch KW4/6Zyl' on the side. I assume that is 6 cylinder ?Jonny Hart wrote:The 8 pin boxes added electronic rev limiting which relies on counting the distributor pulses and knowing the number of cylinders. Some boxes had a cylinder number adjuster in the side.

On the same side it has a small original Phillips head screw. All original yellow tamperproof paint in intact on all screws so looks like it has never been apart.
There is no number on the top of the housing.

Andrew - can you check the number again ?
8-pin CDI's were used on early (pre-'77) Turbos & RSR's as well
- plus non-Porsche applications such as NSU RO80 ...

Must be for a 6 cylinder then, still pretty rare though.

I can hardly believe it myself but it would appear this spark box is a bit unusual.
I've been corresponding with a buy on 911s Registry and he confirmed that this model of 8 pin spark box was indeed used for the 917 race cars and some BMW M1 Procars !!
He tells me he very recently sold one so I've asked him what it sold for to see if he will tell me.

About time I had some luck with my car. Anyone got a 917 ?!!!!!!
Regards
Andrew

Re: 8 pin CDI box No B227020061 - FOR WHAT MODEL ? 917 !!!??
I just got this information from someone on 911S Registry who professes to know
All bosch ignition boxes starting with B are motorsport only items developed by Bosch.
This box was definitely used on 917 but also 'some' BMW M1 pro cars. I got this on a 3.0 race engine so likely to have Porsche heritage but no way of knowing for sure.
Guy I corresponded with sold one very recently for 1500Euro. Freisinger has one for 2500Euro.
1500 Euro it is then
That'll pay <10% of the paint bill for the 3 project car
Easy come easy go. Anyone know a 917 owner ?

Re: 8 pin CDI box No B227020061 - FOR WHAT MODEL ? 917 !!!??
Did some Googling and most images show that the 917 had two coils which kind of means they must have had two CDI boxes as well.
On the assumption that these were sharing alternate ignition triggers, two CDI boxes designed for rev limiting 6 cylinder engines would result in the same RPM limit beign applied for the 12 cylinder engine.
I guess you need to find its matching partner now!

Yep, 2 boxes is what he said.Jonny Hart wrote:Did some Googling and most images show that the 917 had two coils which kind of means they must have had two CDI boxes as well.

I think starting a 917 build project on the basis of having one spark box might be a bit ambitious.
Following the 'laws of gravity' I think this one will be finding a lucky 917 owner
