The all-aluminium Chevy V8 is lighter than a Porsche 'six'.
TBH, when building a hot-rod, I think that crumple zones and the like are the last things on most people's minds. Replacing the wings, bonnet and doors on a road-going 'outlaw' 911 with glassfibre panels would probably be considered cool but won't help you much in an accident – but would it stop someone doing it in search of creating the ultimate lightweight 911? I doubt it. But horses for courses - everybody has different outlooks on building cars. And yes, this car was, I presume, built a) because it's a very cool, cruiser with great acceleration and an awesome exhaust note (that sold it to me when I was in it...) and b) because it's fun and an inexpensive way to have that fun compared to building a 911 engine with 300+bhp (or even 200bhp). Before I sold the righthand drive 914 that Wayne bought off me, I was going to do a V8 build (there, I've said it!) – at the time, I could buy a Chevy small-block 'crate motor' for around £1500 that with the right carburation would deliver 300bhp+. I'd have done it for the same reason that some people build Model 'T' or three-window Model B Ford hot-rods with blown big-block motors. They'd be crap in an accident, too, and not very good round the bends. Not everyone wants to builds car that could lap the Ring at warp speed.
I love it, but then I love drag racing, street rods and grossly over-powered old cars on inadequate running gear. And motorbikes. Now they make no sense at all, however you look at them.
BTW, I'm just being awkward for the hell of it. Because I'm old and I'm allowed to be.

Amen to the above.

I've built 2 hot rods. lots of other modified cars, taught myself to weld doing them etc.
I'm still here.

I hillclimb an aluminium biscuit tin with a 911 engine in the back, 250 bhp in 540Kg and it would be lethal in a big crunch I daresay, but that's life.

As for the sensibility of a motorbike? No sense at all on some modern roads, but alone on a B road?

If your car is more than 10 years old I guess you are taking a considered risk, and in most of our cases having a lot of fun in our 45 year old cars.

This 914 is a hot rod and iffy in places (imho) but it is ok to the builder and the purchaser.

Is it any worse than a Ford 105E with a Cossie drive train in a stock shell?

True. God knows how safe my roof chopped de pillared bug would be in a smack  but I still would have triangulated that front or at the very least sort out those gearbox mounts before it drops the box on the floor

Ditto to what’s been said. While 914’s are plentiful let owners do as they wish. It’s a petrol heads right of passage to modify cars. Like others I’ve roof chopped, shortened chassis and built numerous kit cars to hone my skills in an attempt to surfeit my insatiable appetite.
I agree the holes look a little large in the inner wings and maybe openings or vent outlets in the bonnet would have been a better idea for radiator airflow outlet (plus aid in a small way to downforce and look quite cool if done in a F40 type way). That said, the forward bulkhead is acting as a strut cross brace and the front torsion bar mount is triangulated by the structure created by wing to inner wing (where the bonnet seal sits) albeit not ideal and if I were buying this car as a keeper I’d put diagonal bars from the strut tops down to the front torsion bar mounts for peace of mind.
One day with all the “do gooders” it may be deemed too dangerous for humans to drive cars when automated technology takes over. There is already legislation being passed to ban the sale of caliper and master cylinder repair kits to reduce “the risk” of brake failures from home rebuilds. It will eventually end in laws preventing owners working on their cars entirely. Dark will be that day, and by natural selection the human race will evolve into helpless morons who are reliant upon technology.
For now I suggest we embrace this freedom we have to do as we wish.

Buick/Oldsmobile 215ci or Rover 3.5-litre are one and the same basic unit. Olds/Buick sold the manufacturing right to Rover in the 1960s and Rover carried out progressive upgrades. So it's basically the same unit. But worse

Back in 1998 I was visiting Janspeed who did a lot of motorsport work for Rover. They had a Rover V8 on the dyno that was being developed for a MGF based record breaker destined for Bonneville. It was producing well over 900 BHP

When i was having my MGF VIC check, the inspector told me they'd worked on an electric version which was mind-blowingly fast

Rover's development (along with TVR etc) made it a great engine, but the original Buick/Olds unit (and early Rovers) weren't great. Rear main seal made of rope...
