Contemplating a backdate... Thoughts?

It's been a while since I've been on the forum. Since I sold my 71 2.2 tbh a couple of years ago.

I now miss the feel and look of pre-impact. Don't get me wrong, I love my 89 3.2, but it somehow misses the mark in terms of look (narrow body, chrome, long bonnet) and type of driving experience.

So I bought myself a 76 2.7 coupe. Nice car, from a really nice bloke. 120k miles, and a 6/7 out of 10 for condition and mechanicals.

I'm now contemplating spending a bit of money with Rennsport, Malton or Paul S (or anyone else that might be interested) to back date to resemble (but not slavishly copy) a Steve McQ slate gray 73 car. Swap out the cookie cutters, keep most of the interior, breathe magic into the engine, fuel, gearbox and brakes. Full body restoration. Voila... The look I want, the performance upgraded and a car that will be like new.

So, am I mad? Am I sacrificing a lovely, but bit worn out 2.7? If I budget £40k, am I going to lose my shirt?

Questions, questions! Anyone been in my shoes and took the bold step? Any advice?

Do as you wish, but I think early IBs on cookies look awesome. Too many Steve McQueen reps in this world already.

Perhaps spend the money on the engine and suspension first, and see if you prefer the looks once the driving experience is sorted.

Best car for the money I've seen for a while. Paint it slate grey if you must but you would be mad to do that as well. In the long run it will be cheaper too because no one will want to buy your bitsa whereas that beautiful 68 will hold or even increase in value. Everything has been done pretty well. I was going to give the guy a call but I'll step aside to stop you making a big mistake.

I saw a lovely IB P reg (1976?) Targa today
It was really very refreshing to see something slightly different. It even had cookie cutters but they seemed right for it..

Why wreck a lovely car to make a rep of anything?
Just drive it and enjoy it for what it is.

Failing that, keep it a narrow-bodied impact bumper car. They're going to be the rarest of the rare soon.

A 76 narrow on cookies look great, one of my favorite looks, and will be worth way more than a backdate. Im really digging cookies on impact bumpers at the moment, and fuchs on earlies. As allready said, spend the money on the engine and suspension and buy an real early 911 project with the rest (there are plenty on ebay at the moment, you pick one up from 10k - 15k for a LHD) and keep both.

Ive seen some plain jane 2.7's get some surprising results at auction this year, either its the narrow/chrome/cookie/IB look, or its the 2.7rs pulling up the 2.7 carrera pulling up the 2.7

All those, old skool turbo forward dates (fashion at the time) are worth way less than if the cars had just been left alone to shine for the cars they really were. I guess that's why originality is such a big thing with Porsche's, there arnt that many lol.

Ok, I've made up my mind. I'm taking the sound advice from you DDK'ers.

The cost of the backdate is around £40k. Add that the to the value of the car (£40k). I can't see any investment potential as the car will be worth around £85k when done. I'd have a lovely car, like new, but it won't ever be the real thing. Tempted, but no.

I'm going to go with keeping the car stock.

It's off to Centre Gravity tomorrow for full geo check/set up/corner balance. Perhaps paint. A little bit of retrimming where needed.

The engine and gearbox are sound - and it already has the SSI and Dansk back box.

Decision made. Keep the 2.7 76 as 76.
