Best tyres for a 912 (or SWB 911) ?

Post by roadiesean »

So I have got my Flat 6's on the 912 and they look super smashing great !!!

Image

My question is, the Fuchs came with Dunlop SP Sport Supers in a 185/70 VR 15 size and they look fantastic, but it seems that two of them don't hold air.

The steelies have Michelin 165/70SR15's on so I think they would be a bit undertyred from where I'm sitting. So I probably need to buy some new tyres (also the Dunlops are a bit old - not sure just how old and also they have red paint all over them from an overspray incident)

So, the question is what to go for ? The Dunlops look amazing, like 1960's Grand Prix tyres really, super cool tread pattern and they look just right. I'm after a tyre for spirited driving, unlikely to ever take it on the track, but the roadholding from the XZX's wasn't exactly confidence inspiring, they always felt a bit "tall"

Whats good chaps ? What will look fab and improve the handling on the old dear ??

Thanks

I have a set of Vredestein Sprint Classics 185/70HR15 on my 911E. Very much a classic profile but so far I have been quite impressed - good ride, plenty of grip and reasonably priced.

Love the way they look on the car.

I put a new set of period correct 165 Michelins on mine in the summer as my originals definitely had passed safe use.

I've not had them on track yet, but gave them a good kicking around France and locally and found them very predictable. Too much rubber and you'll never get that adrenaline from getting near the edge. If the cars feeling tall I recommend a set of Bilsteins, made mine handle superb.

Personally I would fit either Michelin or Pirelli. Both the 185/70VR15 and 165HR15 tyres are offered on here http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/page/porsche-911

As we all know, Michelin and Pirelli are 2 of the worlds best tyre manufacturers, and the ones Longstone web site are genuine period carcass design which suits your cars. modern tyres like Vredestein and Khumo are designed to be fitted to modern, very different cars.

Dougie - please excuse my ignorance but what is the difference in construction between the Michelin/ Pirelli carcass design and the Vredsteins?

Just to be different I got Vredstein T Tac. I'm not sure they are the best but the same rubber as the classic sprints but for for less money. Given I've never had my car above 100mph I don't think I'm putting them under much stress.

I would also suggest using event types or etypes as they will come to you and fit for a competitive price.

195/65x15 Vredestein Sportrac 3 – incredible dry grip and excellent in wet, too. Good price but purists won't like the look of the tread. Too bad. :)

Do you think you could run these with tubes? I don't fancy machining my deep 6's but would love to run them on the outlaw with a sticky tyre.

In the end I went for Bridgestone Potenza RE002 in a 185/60 size, I think they look fantastic (I can always switch back to steels with the Michelins if I want retro look) and they grip like crazy, highlighting again how good these little cars are. Suspension is next !

hi All
Mine's a 66' on 15" Chrome Steels. can you please advise the correct tyre size for these wheels? I've imported my and it's been fitted with much lower profile tyres than is standard.
thanks
