New shims and cup washer definitely worked! Thanks to all for the advice, especially Butzsi. Hope the thread helps someone in future.
As an aside, with my quieter exhaust I can now hear a slight knock from one of my CV joints around lefthand bends. Guess I'll be swapping all four of those this winter too.
