Genuine targa top finish ?

Post by glovebox »

Had a request sent to me to day from Herr Breuer, president on the German 914 owners club today!!!!
He wants a paint and product process created to replicate the finish on a 914 Targa Top!!
Which is great because it means I can use my one once the process is finished to show him the finished job! ;))) as some idiot sanded my one flat and painted it Matt black !!!! (Yes it was me !!)

So I have a spare targa top which I think is original?????? But that's the problem!! I can see its be painted a few times with black but not sure if it's been re textured before ??
And when I'm telling the guys from the lab it needs to be more or a bigger texture to what they are giving me with test samples ( and they are looking at me as if to say stupid island monkey !!! :)) )
I'm beginning to wonder if this is original??

So question is does anyone have a original top they could photo and post ? Close up of course.

This is mine

Many thanks in advance

And of course I'll post the finished process once it's done.

Best regards Mark.

Unfortunately mine is in storage at the moment - but I believe the finish is original... it is less uniform orange peel than the pic you have posted and more of a random fleck. It's a 1970 car without the perlon headliner and the finish is same under there too...... also quite a dull matt black, rather than a satin (although I appreciate there are various of levels of satin that can be created).

Hmmm, Looks like your 1st picture of the roof has been repainted heavily before and that's what you've replicated.

I think its more of a light "speckle" finish than a ripple. Certainly on my top (which is a one owner car and never been painted) it was/is like a speckle of fibreglass resin blobs, rather than a ripple stone guard finish.

Not sure how clear it is in this picture, but I found that whatever I tried to patch repair it was a compromise that still bugs me.

Hopefully Kev can confirm the factory finish.

Hi Mark

I part painted mine (ran out didnt finish as my body work man said he'd do it 'properly'). The paint I used wasnt textured so the pattern might still be valid. Ill pull it out and take a look tomorrow,

Id be interested in getting the right paint to do it properly though so keep us posted on that one

thanks

This is the underside of the targa roof on my 1970 car. It hasn't been painted and i'm confident it's original as no signs of restoration when I stripped all the component parts off for cleaning / replacement. Sadly not as sharp as I thought the pic was before I uploaded, but definitely quite a random texture, not a uniform orange peel. Hope that helps a little! Rob

Hi Mark,

Yes the top is the same as the undeside in Robs picture. Just the same as the photo I posted on Friday.

Yes, as Darren says, I only posted the underside as its not been subjected to 40 years of periodic cleaning, which seems to have flatted the top out a little.
