I'm not sure there would be much left of that side if I attack it!
Anyway it's on for now:
Up in one slick move from trolley balanced on jack, to motorbike lift and onto the stand.
I appear to have stuck the rocker covers on with some evil sealant last time around and just spent a joy filled 2 hours getting them off. I now need two new upper rocker covers. Note to self: Don't do this again! They didn't leak though...
One little thing that you know will be lurking at the back of your mind.....once its all done and dusted..
Why didn't I get a bit more power....you're going to 170.. and after a bit 200 will be an 'ideal number'.. so 'if' you are going for new pistons and reboring cylinders plus new oil pump etc etc... 2.7 is a 'little' ( I'll let your imagination define that !) bit of a stretch financially....it does however bring peace of mind. Once done you'll know it made sense
Right now though I'd just be happy with a sweet running standard engine for minimal outlay. The SSIs have been bought as the already second hand ones on there have had it due to rust, and even more as of this morning when I cut one of them into about 10 pieces trying to cut one of the allen nuts off!
For some reason the exhaust stud is almost at the top of the nut so I can get zero purchase on it to undo it. Now I can get to it I'll probably weld a bolt onto it and tackle it that way.
For the rebuild what is the recommendation for studs and nuts? Go fully stainless? I really can't be bother to fight getting an exhaust off for this long again!
Gary
Do you have the elongated socket tool for tightening the SSI nuts....?..let me know...I can post you mine if you like....I did the same as you and cut the old ones off on mine....then used whatever fitted to get the nuts off....but you will need it for reassembly

I thought (new) SSI's had the special tool included with them?
I have used the stock 'tube-nuts' on my 3.2 and copper slip. Still tight after 2 years.
I also used a long 1/4 drive extension to tighten them up, but doubt such and 'instrument' will be man enough to rip the old ones off!
Bitch of a job but at least you can get any broken studs out with ease after stripping.
Lots more fun to come yet!

Final score 1 snapped stud, 1 needing a bolt welding to it (after cutting off the manifolds) and finally 1 nut needing the attention of a splitter. Always fun taking the exhaust off a 911.
Not.
Engine strip started today but tools stopped play due to the lack of long reach 10mm allen socket to get the heads off.
One thing I have noted is a lot of the castings (including the heads) are dated during '70 so seems a little early for a late '71 build, but the engine number is OK for a '72 2.4 so who knows what I have
Nothing scary so far on the LH bank, hone marks still evident, no obvious lip (save the carbon build up)
Some heads with more carbon than others, which correlates to the state of the plugs.
Heads and cambox are coming apart tomorrow so I'll see how much wear is evident in there. I know at least one cam lobe is pitted.
