Value of a 1966 912 Project

So I have a 1966 912, California car originally Irish Green. 1st owner thought he blew up the engine, took it out, dismantled it, fell ill and died. 2nd owner painted over the tub with rubbish white paint and ran a vw motor. I have the matching numbers engine in a box of bits, with all the parts not showing any obvious sign of what caused such a drastic measure to tear it down in the first place.

It's not for sale but if someone wanted it badly enough I could part with it to fund the resto of my 911. I'm already balls deep into the 911 and not sure I can face going round 2 with the 912.

So the question is, what is a solid california raised project 1966 912 worth at today's crazy prices? It should be noted that this is 5 gauge car not the earlier 3.

On the basis of this info Bobby, I'd say it's worth somewhere between £8k and £20k depending on:
(Note I say 'what it's worth', not what someone will pay ....)

- how much metalwork needs replacing/repairing (and don't say none!)
- how many unobtanium parts are present
- status/originality of interior trim/seats
- some, little or no PO bodges or 'upgrades' (latter is best!)
- wheels type and state
- suspension state
- engine parts condition assuming all present.
etc

Photos (lots) would help narrow the range, and in today's market you might well get someone who pays more (and then regrets it!).
Someone planning to do a full resto themselves can clearly afford to pay more than someone who just contracts it out.

Interesting would you say a 3 gauge car is worth more than a 5 gauge ?

Thanks for the feedback. From what I've been seeing, yes the 3 gauge cars seem to be more desirable than 5.

Back to mine, the car is in California - I'm British and live here and am just aware that they seem to sell for more in the UK.

Floors, passenger side needs a proper repair, someone bodged a piece of sheet metal to cover hole. Dare I say, everywhere else seems rock solid, no dents, no damage. I've already stripped it and boxed all the unobtanium. Very complete car with a factory wood wheel tat was hidden under a cheap leather wrap. and a factory wood shifter. Original seats, seat covers ripped. Original glass, 5 date stamped 66 chrome wheels. hubcaps were missing.

An 'easily restorable' car... if you have loadsa money!

I do love it and the plan was always to keep it, there's no better daily driver in my opinion. One day I might have to get a job to fund all this nonsense. I'm moving it on monday to a new storage location, i'll take some pics.

That one certainly seems very similar on paper. bit rough. but along the same wave length. I went looking at a couple today with a mate that's shopping. 20-25 seems to be the magic number.

I'm egging him on to buy a champagne yellow one for 22. and it runs! needs a full resto but nice tight little 912. I'm surprised they're still out there. The other one we looked at had undergone the El Paso street racer treatment. lots of fibreglass and spoilers and funny papers...

Having just purchased the very same thing (although a sunroof model) in pretty much the same state from California I would say circa £8k but if it's money driving the project it will never pay as we expect to put £50k into ours minimum

£8k is bloody cheap imho. I paid more. Bought with my heart not my head. Already bought a 911 and restoring it, getting close to the $50k restoration costs. Nearly finished and not sure I can bare to start restoring the 912.

it's interesting on values as I was I think fairly on the ball on this subject a few years back with cars coming into the UK that I had personally seen over seas.. But of recent I am totally out of touch and wouldn't have a bloody clue!

I know I look from time to time and feel very out of depth on values even having my own cars insured for 2010 prices for a whole heap of time.. now addressed..

at the end of the day if you doing it to sell then your onto a tight budget if your doing it to keep then your going to want to do jobs right to keep the car going..

gone are the days of 912s for £1000

having said that I was looking at the 911T prices as a guide sure the 911 has had a flattering of Media coverage in recent months ( years ) and for that I am sure the prices are + scene tax and some.. but do they really sell now? I think not.. I keep seeing the same cars up for high money. What I am seeing is 912's changing hands at prices more market correct.

Having said that I am also seeing 911 SC's at prices that buck the trend but also the ones full of filler.. now there is a whole new ball game.. hence I went water cooled and 944 and 996 and hell I'm having a bloody ball!!!!!!!!!!
