RNLI to auction a donated 1960 Ferrari 250 GT (SWB)

TWO multi-million pound Ferraris are to be sold off to support a Dorset-based lifesaving charity. The cars owned by the late Richard Colton are to be auctioned in a 'historic sale' with funds used by the RNLI to purchase a lifeboat named after Mr Colton and his wife Caroline.

It is one of the largest bequests ever received by the RNLI and one of the most unusual.

It really wasn't meant to be derogatory — it was about my surprise that something like this appeared in the local paper (between the sea gulls stealing food and local planning issues), when I assume (I'm not big on Ferraris) that someone gifting cars of that value to a charity might be in a more high profile paper.

I apologies.

Will 2mill buy a lifeboat? Very nice idea though.

I was impressed to read that the local paper hereabouts is so proud of its 'dirty-ink-free' new-tech printing that they happily donate their style-free, misinformed, grubby, two-bit rag to the local fast foodies and homeless oiks for free. Christ knows why they should have to suffer it's sensationalist amateurism though is beyond me. Poor sods.

(Remember, print isn't dead. However, it may well be strangled to death by poor editing and lacklustre subbing if it's not very careful... )

No idea but 2 mill doesn't get you into a SWB these days, nearer 10 mill might, I'd guess.

Whatever, the RNLI need as much as possible as it's run purely on voluntary contributions. No government input whatsoever. How on earth did that happen.

I see your point... Poor subbing by me!

So, a fleet of spangly GTI lifeboats then for the RNLI?

No better cause really.

Run on a shoestring with each voluntary member risking their own life for others.

No better cause.

It happens.

Here's another one.

The UK's search and rescue helicopters and bases, mainteneance jobs, ground control formerly run by the RAF now seem to have been sold to the Americans to operate on a least cost basis. How does that work then? Do you get charged for being rescued? Coca Cola liveries on helicopters? Winch man in a Burger King jump suit?

First I've heard of the Ferrari donation. Very commendable. Maybe the deceased owes his life, or someone close, to the RNLI. The local boat here was called out three times in four days last week for rescue.
They do a great and hazardous job.

Regards
Mike

Worse than that Mike , a good mate of mine is just about to finish his stint at (ex) Gannet.

The first rule of RN SARS is, there are no rules. The crew will risk life and limb in the middle of winter to rescue a fisherman/mountain climber etc.

This new setup will be run under CAA health and safety rules (albeit with ex SARS crew), just don't get stuck up a mountain if the weather is a bit dodgy!

RNLI do a great job, it's my company's designated charity.unfortunatly I have known a good few fishermen that have lost their lives at sea over the years.

A wee pic of us having a play with a seaking........

The latest Shannon class All weather lifeboat cost just over £2 million and an Atlantic 85 rib is about £250,000 so the money will go a long way.

Some people bang on about the RNLI being one of the richest charities but I heard that if donations stopped today, operations would have to cease in 6 months.

Great picture Dave. I got winched up to Seaking a few years ago. It was a great experience having never been on a helicopter before
