Which Paint for 1968 911L - Polo Red (6802)

Following work to the lower door panels and both corners at the bottom of the rear screen these parts and bonnett will need repainting.

It seems the two choices for a full respray are Acrylic Lacquer or Two Pack.

What is the "considered" opinion on which way to go for authenticity, best finish, cost and effect on the car's subsequent value?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Personally i dont think it matters. Just let your bodyshop guide you. It will either be lacquer over basecoat, or 2k solid. I'd say that red is one of the worst for fading, and your best of with a lacquer over base. They will use both.

I have a polo red 66 911 and will have the same issue, I think I might go 2K - I know of the fading issue but sort of like he thought that after 5 or 10 years the paint taking on an aged look? I think the real issue regardless of 2K or clear over base is the quality of the paint itself. No point in using something cheap.

too true, and i suppose you can always just keep it regularly polished, if you go 2k. Just dont use anything with any cut in it.

Why would you use 'Knacker Lacquer' as Acrylic paints have been referred to for years.

Original paint suppliers to Porsche were Herbol, Glasurit and Lechler.

Glasurit still produce a 22 line 2k product in Germany but I have failed to find anyone in the UK with a mixing scheme and Glasurit generally recommend the use of their 68 Line product for Classic 911s.

If you use 2K you will have a choice of PPG, Octoral and Sherwin Williams all of who have a formulation for Polo Red as we painted a car in this colour last week.

We used Octoral as it is locally available to us and we have used in an a number of occasions with good results.

If you use a basecoat with a clearcoat then IMHO the level of gloss will be wrong for an early Porsche.

The only way to obtain the correct finish will be flat the final lacquer to remove the gloss and then polish back to obtain the correct level of 'shine'

I am not sure why you shouldn't mop 2K with a sensible compound such as G10?

Sound advice from Chris....2K and Octoral would be a good way to go.

I'd never paint a solid colour in base and lacquer.

there ya go advice from the pro's =) no i know too. Im far to used to mettalics!

the cut i was referring wasnt for recently after paint, i meant best to polish on the typical twice yearly basis, with something with no cut in it (i.e dont use Mer), to keep the red from fading even faster than it should. Maybe modern reds dont fade. it was just a thought.
