Rear bearing or not rear bearing that is the question

Morning

my rear wheel hub has a little bit of play (about 2 mill wobble) and the rear bearings feel a little dry, they dont spin as smoothly as I suspect they should. I could take the hub off and grease the bearing and then put the hub back in to see if that helps? Am I avoiding changing the bearings? Well Ive read you need presses and special tools etc so yes a bit. But the car is stripped and Id be stupid not to have a go. This chap makes it look soooo easy...

If there's play and it feels a bit dry then I would suggest they might need replacing.

He does make it look easy. And I'm sure it is that easy

Yep I think your right. Ill do that next after Ive fitted the new brake lines.

Actually a follow up question ...I got all new ready made lines from Mittlemotor. Im having difficulty matching the lines to my old set. Did the line lengths change through the years? Mine a 76.... might just be an optical illusion as my old set are bent up and cut in places so I might be just using the wrong bits to compare...

In my experience you may struggle to get them out like that. Some are so stuck in there you may be pulling that pull hammer all night. I have more luck taking the arm off and using a socket and extension, hammering it from the other side. The socket should be the same external diameter as the visible part of the bearing on the drive shaft side. Nowadays I just do it all with my press in minutes. Old bearing out and new one in all in about 10mins. If you want send the arm and new bearing to me and I'll put the new one in for you, you just cover the postage.

If your in mid Wales (ish) I could make a day trip to you (Im in Staffordshire) - would that be ok? If Im taking the arms out Ive a couple of bushing replacements it would be good to get them in at the same time. Dont worry if not I can get them in the post no probs.

Ive got some pivot bushes yes, I was going to leave them but since Im taking the arm off I might as well do them at the same time. I'll get me some bearings then and drop you a line to see whens best.

Ive not been very well the last couple of months, not quite sure what Ive got (nothing contagious I promise). Normally Id wrestle my way through something like this but at the moment anything that saves a bit a time and effort would be a god send. I can sit behind the wheel of a car but I cant wrestle with spanners very well!

Bearings ordered today Ill have a look at taking arms off later and getting all my bits ready.

Excited now... a little road trip and spanners - sounds a good day out to me!

OK. You'll need a 22mm spanner to take the big nut off the inner ear. Usually a 15mm socket to undo the 3 bolts that are on the outer end of the arm. Then crack open the break line. Take the caliper off (2 - 19mm bolts) and re-connect the break line to the caliper, so break fluid doesn't leak everywhere. Undo the big bolt and remove from the bottom of the coilover. Undo the 6 hex bolts that hold the CV joint onto the gearbox. Take it all off, put it in a bin liner and repeat for the other side.

thankfully the engines out, all the callipers and brake lines etc are already stripped (new stuff ready to fit). I just need to remove the new shocks I put in and then undo the bolts you mentioned. Ive just checked and I have the right sized spanners.

So the bad thing is that Im not very well but the good thing is Im working from home and can buy bearings for my car (every cloud!)
