Speedo removal
Gents
I want to fit a Brantz rally trip sensor to the speedo cable of my 1969 911. Any tips on speedo removal to achieve this? I have removed the blanking disc to the right of the speedo and got my fingers in behind to try and push it out and although there is some movement, there appears to be some form of bracket securing it in place so it won't just pop out. I don't want to force anything and cause damage so how do I get access behind?

Re: Speedo removal
The '69 gauges are held in with a clamp bar, held with two knurled nuts. Later ones were just push fit.

Re: Speedo removal
Usually to remove the '69 & earlier gauges you need to access the knurled nuts/brackets from the front luggage compartment after removing the bitumen (?) cover that goes across the back - small hands are an advantage !

And to access those bracket nuts - I've done it from the luggage compartment (on my 69 car). Not tried the hand through the clock hole method (because mine has a clock not a blank), but that seems unlikely to work unless you have access to a contortionist.
From the luggage compartment I found the clock and speedo brackets fairly easy to get to without removing the heater box.
Be careful of the wires for instrument illumination. You'll need to remove the bulb holders from the rear of the instruments before pulling the instruments out through the dash, but the wires to those bulb holders are quite fragile, in my (cack-handed) experience.
Speedo illumination is an MoT item these days, apparently...

Re: Speedo removal
I'd love to think I could reach those knurled nuts without taking the heater blower out, but alas I have fingers like carrots, so no way of reaching in! Can't believe that a simple job like this could be turned into such a palava! Any ideas on minimal removal of heater gubbins, just enough to gain access?

Re: Speedo removal
Success! I did have to remove the heater blower, no chance of me getting my hand in there otherwise. Gives enough access to disconnect the speedo cable and work on it without removing the speedo itself, so a result all round.

Re: Speedo removal
Spoke too soon!
Today I got stuck into installing the Brantz trip but hit a snag. The type of sensor I have is one that requires the speedo cable to be threaded through its body, so after duly cutting back the sheathing on the cable, I find that the knurled nut and remaining piece of sheathing won't slide off the cable in order to thread it through! Anyone been down this road before? Looks like a wheel sensor or something coming off the transmission is needed, but I could do with some advice before I go wasting money on something that doesn't work.
