Hot Starting

Post by mdmax72 »

I've got a 914 engine in the Speedster converted to twin webers.

For the first time the other week it wouldn't start after a quick fuel stop. It was a hot evening and l was at a constant 80mph before the fuel-stop. Temp was in the normal position. In the end had to leave it for 15-20 mins whilst l had a coffee to let it cool down. Guess this was down to fuel evaporation whilst the engine was hot?? Any of you guys had experience with this. Any cures to hot starting.

What type of inlet manifold gaskets are fitted? You can get thick fibre ones that help reduce the heat transfer

You could fit the thick head-to-manifold insulating gaskets that come in the full gasket set, or CSP sell one to go between manifold and carb for the IDF. With carbs/injection at the throttle body I've always felt you want the manifold to be hot so preferred the later.

But you want to stop the fuel chambers in the carbs (and the rest of the fuel system) from receiving too much heat transfer.

Cheers, David and Simon.

Only using the paper gasket between head and manifold, not the thick one. Thought these were just for the injection rather than carbs?

Sourced some thick carb to manifold gaskets from Dellorto.co.uk. In stock, they are actually made by CSP Simon as you said. I'll get some on order and see how it goes.

Just checking its not the 'hot-starter' issue I've experienced previously, out of nowhere the starter won't even engage? Mine got progressively worse especially driving through france one summer $30 hot starter relay kit purchased from US fitted by myself (that simple) solved everything...
Hope you sort it whatever it may be... Ben

Ben it cranks over fine. It was constant motorway motoring, then pulled into services for pits top (fuel n p155) then it wouldn't restart u till it cooled a little.

These came in the post today (3mm insulator block) so will fit and see how it goes.
