From What I believe the casings, crank etc are identical but the pistons and cylinders are different. Luckily I'm on hols at the mo or would probably looking at engine mods. I read an article in the US where they put 964 cams, 9.5-1 pistons and SSI's (still using the CIS) and got 230bhp............yoda wrote:Very clear. I quite like the idea of a hot rod US 2.7 Carrera with an RS spec MFI engine. Is the base engine a reasonable basis for this or better to start with a clean slate? Could go twin plug and bigger capacity as well!

I know what you mean ..... Easy way to while away a couple of hours if you're not careful. I really like the MFI power delivery so would prefer that route. 2.8 / 2.9 twin plugged MFI engine should be good for 240+ bhp which would be perfect for a car like that.

I think that's a conservative estimate Feroz - I had a 2.8 twin-plug engine that produced ~ 255 bhp on Webers & mfi is generally thought to add a further 10 bhp with all else remaining the same.yoda wrote:... 2.8 / 2.9 twin plugged MFI engine should be good for 240+ bhp which would be perfect for a car like that.

Hi Andy. Even better! Do you think there is much to gain by increased displacement e.g. 2.7 vs 2.8 / 2.9 / 3.0? Costs seem broadly in line so wondering why people don't always go for bigger capacity option in a hot rod where authenticity doesn't matter.
Thanks

Re: 74 Carrera Euro Spec vs 74 Carrera US Spec price differe
If you're basing your engine on 7R crankcases, 2.8 litres used to be the maximum capacity which still retained longevity - the walls of the 2.9 litre cylinders were very thin ( you could almost deform them with hand pressure !). Race engines which were rebuilt after every race were another matter.
However, I think there has been further development in recent years & the problem has been largely overcome - Paul Madden ran a 2.9 litre engine (hard) in his 'hotrod' without (as far as I know) any problems.

Re: 74 Carrera Euro Spec vs 74 Carrera US Spec price differe
The full article can read here - seems to be a relatively low cost way of matching or improving on Euro Spec RS - this again leads me to what value is a rust free US 74 Carrera worth - please don't answer just another comment!!!redrobin911 wrote:From What I believe the casings, crank etc are identical but the pistons and cylinders are different. Re: 74 Carrera Euro Spec vs 74 Carrera US Spec price differe
So 2.7 CIS came with 7R crankcases? Wouldn't that be a good way of building up a spare MFI engine for a genuine 2.7RS to preserve the original engine. In the '80s a lot of rebuilds for RSs were done with 5R cases...

Re: 74 Carrera Euro Spec vs 74 Carrera US Spec price differe
One problem is that at the moment these US carreras are well priced and that may not be so in 2-3 years at that stage if the cars are more valuable then it would make sense to have the original engine? This is why i'm curious on the value of the US Carrera in the first place - but I too want it to be as fast as the Euro spec car...
