US Import

Post by tp_reading »

Hi,
My 914 is on it's way from the USA. First job will be to covert to UK road use so it can be MOTed. I guess I will need to compile a list of parts to swop over from US spec. Any help will be very much appreciated!
Many Thanks,
Tony.

 ..hooray, another one in the UK!

Just got mine through the MOT and sent off registration papers. Lots of folks on here have done it so there's help out there. I had to do the RHD headlight swap, get the windscreen washer and horn working but it was easy enough. I guess you will need rear euro lenses too if you haven't already got them?

Let's see some pics of the car…and good luck with it all.

Container ship diverted to Vallencia, so now due Tillbury 9th July. In the meantime I have been busy tracing the cars racing history. Here is what I found today:-)

"Bloody hell" is spot on as a response, I think we'll hear it before we see it.

Many congrats on the purchase and for bringing it back across the pond. You'll be giving Moggy a run for his money when he's back on the road.......

Look forward to seeing it in the flesh at some point.

Something tells me that thing's gonna kick my ass  Looks like a really nicely prepared race car. What are you hoping to do in it? racing (which discipline/championship?), track days (if so let me know where and when and I'll join you) or get it road legal and scare the locals? or all of the above.

Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.

It was bought by a collector in 2013, polished up a bit and made US road legal. First job is to register it for the road over here. I'm thinking about PCGB Speed and Hillclimb next year, but really bought it to do some historic rallys like the MSA Spring Rally which I did this year in my 968 . Certainly hope it will attract some attention. I've always liked 914's , they are really popular in all kinds of US motorsport, but somehow don't get the respect they deserve in the UK.

Thanks for your offer of help Moggy, I'm sure that I will need to take you up on it !

I'll be doing the PCGB Speed Challenge championship in my 914 next year too. Still hoping to get a few rounds in this year, once I straighten it out a little after my mind forgetting it wasn't a rally car anymore and getting sucked into a ditch

Would Roger Bray Restorations in Exeter be the best place for RHD headlights and rear Euro lenses, or could you recommend anyone else please ?

Its getting nearer, collecting the car from Dartford container depot on Monday :-)

Hi Tony, Congratulations on your purchase. That looks the business. Can't wait to see it in the metal.

Roger Bray would be the obvious choice. There are others in Germany though too such as Patrik Hess http://914er-shop.de/en/index or Mittelmotor http://www.mittelmotor.de

There is Arno Wienands http://www.914parts.nl/ or Van Zweeden http://www.v-zweeden.com in Holland.

Might be worth speaking to Angus at VW Camper Co http://www.vwcamperco.com too in case he has spares (he has been bringing cars and parts in from the US - and some US cars have Euro lenses).

Only comment I would make is that the cheaper lenses are aftermarket and don't fit that well (I snapped one of the mounting pins on mine). The proper ones are the Hella branded ones. Though they are somewhat more expensive.

Good luck with the car.

Should also have said that the headlights are standard Austin Mini units (as available for various British models of similar vintage).

I'm building up quite a nice history file on the car now. Here is one from 1996, driven by Chuck Piazza in Savannah Historics at Roebling Road Race Track. Leading the pack !
