1973 911T CIS fuel pump gone kaput - help

Hi all,

I was finally getting my '73 Targa back on the road after 2 years hibernation. Took the plugs out, bit of oil in the cylinders, spun it on the starter, plugs back in and then turned the ignition switch on to let the fuel pump run for a few minutes to prime fuel to the engine. It's a US import so has CIS injection and the electric pump always needed a little time to pull the fuel through after a layup but after 2 minutes of running (with the tank half full and front jacked up) it suddenly stopped.

I checked power was getting to it but the body felt hot so I assume it has seized. When I removed it and tipped some petrol out the inlet pipe a flood of iron filings came out too - arrrgh. I guess it's completely lunched. It's a Bosch pump with an inlet in the centre top of the pump and a single outlet at the base of the pump, strangely where I'd expect the motor winding to be.

Euro's are quoting £527, Pelican $632 or a very different looking Pierburg replacement at $215.

The car is original but I would consider the Pierburg if it comes recommended.

Does anyone have any advice on what replacement pump I should get, or even if the original can be refurbished?

Talk to Chris Turner (Butzsi).
He replaced mine when it failed.

Hi John,

do you know the part number of the pump you have?

My '74 2.7 CIS had a Bosch 0580364002 fitted.

Early CIS pumps do seem to be spectacularly expensive so would be interested to hear what is recommended as a replacement.

If it is the same or similar and you go down the replacement route I might be interested in the pump for spare parts.

JB - I've spoken to Chris and he was very helpful, he's going to send me details of some options.

Andrew - I think the part number is 0580254991 see photo below, which is similar but not the same as yours:

I phoned Canford Classics on the basis of another post I found but they no longer have a source for the Bosch replacement and use Porsche replacements, which are pricey to say the least.

I'll also give KMI a call and let you know what I find.

Based on the exploded view of yours Andrew I may have a shot at dismantling mine to see what has gone wrong.

Chris Turner has found a good second hand CIS pump that I'm buying and he's also discovered that he can get new replacements but they are quite pricey. He's advised me to check the petrol tank for rust as that may have caused the current pump to fail.

I spoke to Steven at KMI who was also very helpful and he does an equivalent pump for a bargain £88+vat but the outlet pipe is slightly further away from the inlet and at 90degrees to the original so would require a little reconfiguration but nothing major.

In the end my desire to keep the car as original as possible drove me to the rather more risky and slightly more expensive second-hand option. Hopefully it'll have a good amount of life left in it!
