Does anyone know if there is route to having a 1973 fuel tank refurbished?

Depends what you mean by refurb! I have had my tank out and I clean and painted it but there were no hole or major damage before I started. See my thread below:

Thats £191 inclusive of vat. You could always de rust the insides through electrolysis at home. Never done a fuel tank but do most of my other rusty parts like that.

I think an oil tank could be used but your range would be limited.

good price on the ECP tank!

Ive read (this might have only applied to the impact bumper tanks which i needed at the time of research), that you could't use the POR 15 type stuff to recoat the inside, because of the internal baffelles/filter on the orginal tank (mine was a 78), and it could all end up coming off into your injection/carbs.

So for the price - get the ECP one. Ive heard they can rust, but most people just keep them full of fuel and use a fuel stabiiser, to minimise it

Just don't do what one of our customers just did - he refurbished his tank and used a sealant which we poured into the tank and 'sloshed' around.

He then allowed it to dry and filled the tank. Unhappily the Tank sealant he used doesn't appear to be Ethanol resistant and after 2-3 weeks the fuel dissolved the sealant and turned the complete mixture to a glue like consistency which the filled the recenty rebuilt carbs and they seized up solid.

We had to replace the tank, fuel lines, fuel pump and rebuild the carbs again!

I would be very wary of what you pour into the tank.

Interesting discussion. I have used and its still common practice to seal motorcycle tanks with proprietary products such as POR 15 or "Slosh", never used to have problems with degradation but deffo worth checking ethanol resistance with manufacturer before using.

The tank in my car was treated by me after manufacture with the POR products a pre treatment and a sealer as I remember . I did the work more than 5 years ago. When building the tank I did remove the filters and swirl pot to fit top mounted dip tubes so can't comment how they might be affected but I'd bet the filter would clog.

The tank is filled with fuel foam. I have zero degradation of the finish and no debris appearing in the pre or pump filters. That said the price of a replacement tank does seem good however not all restorers have oodles of cash and a saving made using a legitimate repair may be more attractive to some.

IMHO (and I'm a tight wad!!)
