With so much cool fun stuff happening at Redtek it's always an exciting place to visit......

.....when that fun stuff involves seeing your own 2.5 ST spec engine being assembled that excitement is cranked up a notch or three!.....

Image

.....to get to the fairly straightforward stage of building the bottom end there's a mass of work that goes into readying a competition spec engine...

.....cases have come up well and the natural finish looks great....as well as being honed and pinned these have had a lot of machining for the larger barrels and gas flowing etc...

Image

....my pump had seen better days and this has been replaced with a practically NOS item that Nick sourced.....

Image

Image

....tell tale signs of the balancing that's been carried out to the crank....

Image

....same balancing treatment was also carried out to the new lightweight flywheel....

Image

.....Nick recommended Pauter lightweight forged steel rods which he's used on many race engines.....not only far stronger than standard rods but a third lighter too....

Image

Image

....all specs re-checked for the umpteeth time and then onto assembly....

Image

....bottom end in....

Image

.....I also got the chance to see the Mahle barrel decks being CNC machined.....a really boring video for those interested....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWJcnyf_2lE

...and the finished article....

Image

....with the cases bolted together you can see machine work that's been carried out to improve airflow....for the sake of longevity and reliability the machining isn't quite as extreme as for (throwaway) race engines back in the day although exactly the same process....

Image

Image

....and with the barrel in place you can see how this all comes together....

Image

....I originally had the idea of keeping all my redundent 2.2S parts in case I ever decided to revert back.....this clearly is never happening!

I now plan to have all the original parts refurbished before selling on, this will inlude cams, barrels and pistons, con rods, dizzy, shroud and the complete induction system including air intake etc......if anyone has an idea on values please could you PM me?

....with bottom end assembly complete.....

Image

....I got an idea of how the small fan housing and MM dizzy will look...

Image

....the fan housing is the aluminium item I purchased that has been black anodised and now looks great however this is also for sale as I'm swapping this out for a magnesium housing that Ben Coles has just produced....

.....now looking forward to the next stage......re-worked heads twin plugged and ready to go....

Hi Darren,
There is a company in Manchester that do the ribbed rubber floor among other bits of trim.
Don't know if it matches.

I may be near there on Friday if you want a sample

Sweeeeet. How good is all that - and what a list of things that you've done to the car. This is going to be one great machine.

Well done for keeping the faith and not compromising when it gets difficult!

Kudos....

Another landmark day on Friday as I took the shell to Gary for assembly....

....once the moon had gotten out of the way the car looked great in the hazy sunshine....

Image

.....seats bolted in for transportation, I'm going to like these....

Image

....after sorting a list of niggles/improvements I took the E home with me...

Image

....I've been talking to Gary now about this project now for a while now and have welcomed his input, enthusiasm and ideas; as he's dealt with jobs on the E I've been super pleased with his communication, approach, attention to detail....and his costs.....really refreshing! :) .....

....in every respect I'm super confident that the Mongrel in the best place for the rebuild and in very safe hands....

Image

....the next couple of months should be a lot of fun :)

Cheers,
