912E engine mounting bar - borrow or buy

Post by camperco »

We are installing a 2.3 VW Type 4 engine into a '69 912.

Does anyone have an engine mounting bar from a 1976 912E that we could borrow to copy or buy from you?

(the 1976 912E was fitted with a VW type 4 engine)

Any help or steerage welcome

Think you'll be lucky to find one in the UK, probably easier to start from scratch with tubing as they are a cast/forged item.

Do you have pictures of one?

We dont have any pictures. I've just been looking on the Pett but no luck so far. We can make our own but we would like to be able to tell the owner that its at least inspired by the original..

You will find the 912E parts listing in the US version of PET listings under 911 1974-1977.

Not a great photo but you can see the bar from when I installed my rebuilt engine. There are U shaped mounts on the underside chassis near the more forward than 911 ones.

There are only about 15-20 912e's in the UK, only about 1200 were made so I think finding a spare bar here is going to be tough.

Thats really helpful guys. We are putting this into a 1969 car and the chassis mounts are different so it looks like we are making our own.

I actually have a 912E bar (I had to drive to Norway to get it though :) ) AND replica 912E mounts. A company named Original Customs make the mounts. I haven't installed the engine/mounts/bar yet and I am not sure I ever will, with the welding in mounts and that heavy cast iron bar.

Now, if anyone could make a bar that would use the original 912 mounts...

Hi Angus. I have a friend who has installed a few TIVs into 912s. I think he uses the stock 912 bar, but I'm not sure. Either way, I can ask him. Drop me a PM if you'd like me to do that.
