Morning all,
The engine lid hinges clashes on the carbs and air cleaner so need to find a solution. Looks like moving the hinges further out passed their current position may not work due to the curve of the body, lack of fixing points and the inner skin of the lid is just a hole so was thinking about the 911R external hinges but the dreaded IVA test?





Rich - I can make them from stainless to any similar shape, any idea what I would need to do to make them pass? Maybe will need to use something temporary for the test and then use after?

Hiya Greg

If you keep them below 40mm you'll be fine. Anything below 5mm requires the edges to be blunted, anything higher than 5mm you'll need a radius of 2.5mm. Apart from that your good to go.

If you use a thicker upright on the body side of the hinge, you could thread one side and countersink the other, this would make more space for the body side of the hinge fixings to be the same as the lid. Would look cleaner to. Just a thought.

Thanks for your thoughts, like the idea of threading one upright and countersink the other, as you say would look cleaner. I will make the swivel hinge plate 5mm thick and radius to 2.5 mm each side same with the uprights, which will give a better thread location. Right will get them drawn up and cut/ welded.

Ok, this weekends work includes;
Trial fitting the carbs and air filter



only to find the hinges and the inner skin clash. I have designed a 911R external hinge to fabricate over next few weeks



Make a template, cut aluminium plate and weld the shock tower covers



Still need to fettle the back edges on both sides to get a better angle fit. Then off to powder coaters

Can you not loose the air filter cowling and put some K&N's on. Would look so much nicer and cleaner.

They are real sweet.

I think I will have to use rain hats on the Zeniths to prevent removing most of the inner engine lid skin. They would still clash with the hinges, but excited by the 911R design. I have sent a drawing off for laser cutting.

Andy thanks for the encouragement, when you are deep in the dodo, difficult to see what you have done. Seem to have a million part done jobs, mostly due to waiting for parts etc. I feel a long list is needed to tackle the right jobs to get something finished.

Hebster, I can see mini hinges working well if not entirely original look. If I had space and had thought about it earlier in the build, I would deffo look at some of the American Hot Rod off the shelf options. Really nice looking billet aluminium option with full power.

Updates from the weekend;
Some bling;


Really enjoyed designing and making the battery holder;


Hope I can use the centre fill for the test looks great


Door handle fitted both sides


Now, the result of nearly two days work and the door handles, latch and internal pull all work, really not an easy job. very fiddly and mind sapping
First the passenger door inside I used a swivel mount to line through nicely with lock. Need to change all the M6 bolts and washer yet,


Could not do the same on the driver side as the door seemed a little different shape

Nice battery bracket Greg. What's the chance of the live terminal side touching the top of the bracket and shorting out??
