1970 911E Sporto Resto

In Feb 2014 a work colleague showed me a blurry phone pic of half a red 911 parked up in a tiny garage. It was his wifes Uncles who had passed away and they were beginning to clear his estate. I informed him of my interest and desire it buy it. He told me that it had been put up in the garage 30 years previous due to ill health. Shortly after I left the Job and went else where, we swapped numbers and I made sure he knew how serious I was about buying it. Fast forward to January 2015 and I finally had it on the back of a trailer. I'd almost given up on owning it but having thought about the car every day for almost a year It was going to have to be in a serious bad way for me not to buy it.

I had planned to stow it away for a couple of years, collecting some parts up and then hitting it when my lotus was complete. However I had a free day so thought i'd pull it apart to assess what i've got myself into.

The car had been taken out of the garage and towed to a porsche garage for assessment, it had then sat out side for 4 months so the first thing I did was strip the interior to dry it out. Sadly I didn't take any pics of the interior but its very clean and complete except the carpets knackered.
If you look closely the accelerator pedal is on the wrong side of the brake, I think this might be because the uncle either only had one leg or one working leg.





The only non original part was the whale tale, luckily i've picked one up from Joel off here.

















The car wasn't registered until 1975 so i'd like to try and find out why. After pulling it around today it also seems to have been repainted (same colour) at some point in its short 20 year spell on the road.

Had a spare pair of hands over this afternoon to help pull some bits off -



thats pretty much how it stands now minus a front wing also removed. Won't get a change to pull more stuff off for another 3 weeks.

Those rear overriders are for a Nerf bar. Very nice extra if you still have it.

Excellent! Nice to see the lid being reused and on a Sporto no less! So, what are you going to do it? Back to original? Keeping the Sporto? singer recreation?

Would the S bumper and front overriders be later additions? Car looks largely complete and interior looks good.

Ah is that what the holes are for? I was pondering over them.

Once I get a few more bits off I can access what the plans for it are. I'd like to sympathetically restore it without a total bare metal strip but currently thats looking unlikely. Plan is to keep it original with slight a reduction in the wheel to arch gap. Definitely plan on keeping it a sporto.

It was registered in the UK 05/75 then the Previous owner has had it since 08/77. Think there were 3 or 4 keepers in between that time so it move around a bit. I've got the 1977 sales receipt for it somewhere. It seems like the last owner was a bit of a Porsche club Meet regular so i'm hoping I might be able to get some info from them once i'm a paid up member.

Not much happened on the 911 Since taking some bits off. I've wrapped and sorted all the parts that i've pulled off. Sourced an o/s wing and another few little bits. I've decided to tuck it away until i've got my Lotus back together which is very nearly there thank god, hopefully start of June it will be Mot'd again and I can put the imperial spanners away. I've also decided to streamline my life by selling my boat (my home) to help fund the 911.

The engine came out a month or so ago then I got hit by a busy spell at work. Finally i've got a week off so to get some much needed Progress done on the Porsche.

Today I set about stripping down the engine.





Oof, some crap in there.


at least the Vac is still working on the Sporto.


This was supposed to be MOT'd on Saturday but they couldnt get the Chassis No to go into the system and I forgot the logbook.





everything came off nicely and I only had a few bits which I failed to mark up so now have no idea where they go. Well that was until I got to the F'ing exhaust manifolds/exchangers. Now they were a right ball ache to get off but after pulling every tool available out of the box a bit of imagination got them off with only one snapped stud.





Nothing more reassuring than a load of water coming out of a head while you've got it tipped up.

Today i've had the joy of removing Wiring looms.



They're out and I think I know where they go back. They are all unmolested and in very good condition. Connectors still look fresh as do the wires. Whats peoples opinions on replacing them/not while they are out?

maybe, the whole car is. I put them there when I dropped the engine and its stayed like that. Its coming back down tomorrow.

The shell looks to be in fantastic condition, I don't think you have too many problems there. The motor looks to be a different issue, you need to get that to a specialist asap
