Morning, The latest electrical update. Will a lot of help from friends all the lights are working (indicators, Hazards, side lights, gauges, fog light, reverse light, number plate light front and rear, wiring for starter in, main loom to engine in etc. Everything except items that cant be connected, brake switch, electric speedo, any engine connections.

Question
The main battery/ starter motor cable runs down one side of the sill and the main loom the other. Whilst the wires are shrink wrapped not sure if this is enough protection????? I cant find anything in the IVA manual specifically about it.

What a mess of wiring. making them look good is going to be more difficult. I have found some velcro one wrap braided sleeve in various diamteres which should tidy thing up.

So the next job is to fit the heat shield into the engine bay, then re-install the engine and gearbox followed by the rest of the mechanics.

Really not happy with the quality / fit of the shine down licences plate and reverse light. Very rippled and does not pull snug to the contour of the body. So either re-work or fit something else.



I have thought about using the 550 Spyder version but then there is no reversing light and may fit no better. The pain of buying rep parts and not being what you expected.

Hi Greg
Think your right, nothing in the manual about the wiring shielding etc.

Think id run it through a piece of the plastic conduit just for safety. I'd also put a 50-60amp fuse in between battery, starter and alternator just in case it shorts. The more safety precautions the better.

I used this stuff, really easy to use and very flexible for different thickness looms. Great strength and protection capabilities. Also really easy to run another cable through just in case you missed something out. Or want to add additional circuits without having to run them alongside the outside of the loom.
To stop the ends fraying either use a small piece of heat shrink or tape the ends.

I agree with you so have already installed an in-line main fuse and manual cut off switch. The cut off is more for security than anything else.

These velcro bundling shielding wires seem very good if a little expensive. Like you say you can add wires later. I think these would be ideal under the dash/ luggage area etc

It might have been better to run the wires down the tunnel but hoping to run the fuel line there so thought better to kept fuel and sparks separate. I could use plastic spiral cable binding along the sills/ engine bay area which could be added without removing the wire loom etc. I guess I will use P clips to hold everything in place.

That spiral binding stuff looks to be an ideal product, good even if you've already installed the loom.

As to the Velcro ties, might make the loom rather bulky in places. You could just use some loom tape?

Easiest way to sort the dash wiring is have the main loom on the otherside of the bulkhead (tank side) and drill a suitable size hole for a grommit directly behind each instrument so you can direct the appropriate wires to each instrument. Keeps everything in order then? But depends on how far you got with the wiring route.

I have finished applying a 2 mm thick aluminiumised heat shield matting to the inside of the engine bay, but leave access to various screws etc. The idea is to protect the paint work from any latent heat damage. This job took a full day to mark and cut templates, check them. transfer template onto matting for cutting. Mask all the painted surfaces to prevent glue getting everywhere (except all over me) and finally adding the mat and smooth down.

I plan to use a rubber plastic bubble seal around the opening to protect the edge of the mating and create a seal to the closed engine/ boot lid. Just need to find a source.







Used a Hi Temp contact adhesive. Product worked very well. Hope it preforms like s says on the tin!

Hi Folks, Managed to get some pics of yesterdays work, finally got back on schedule to my list.
Latest updates;

Left my mate alone for five minutes with the welding torch and he made a fantastic bracket for the oil stat

Is this a thermostat that lets the oil return directly to engine(oil tank?) while oil is cool and when it heats up it sends it to the external cooler in the front?

I'm going to have to do a similar solution for my type-1 engine due to my choice of coolerfanhousing..

Hi Hebster52. Your project is going really well if the pictures are anything to judge. Its the thought of the finish line which drives me on Yes that is a thermostat from a 911 which I modified to fit in the space. There are various off the self solutions available for different temperature oils. I need to fit one to my 356 coupe with a oil cooler at front as most of the time the oil is too cold.

How did you determine the correct height for the oilcooler in relations to the engine?

My friend has a 911 so just measured the positions and put it as close as I could to the original.

Is the bottom of the tank higher of lower than the crankcase bottom?

Hebster I will check when the engine is back in as I can't remember, maybe there are other pictures on line?

Spent some time this weekend running the accelerator cable and clutch hydraulic line down the central tunnel, amazing how long a simple job can take - most of Saturday.

Received the gasket for the rear bonnet lip which unfortunately is a little too large, whilst it is very squashy leaves the engine lid proud of the surrounding body and clashes during closing. So back to the internet and find some small stuff.

Beautiful set or big reds almost ready to go. Just struggling with the dust rings on the front. They fit around the piston but seem too large for the calliper housing recess. Maybe its just "I don't know the trick"

The rear gap between engine and fire wall is now sealed with aluminium sheet.


Looks like the hinges will clash with the air filter so will need to organise some different hinges.
