912 1.6 Main Bearings

Post by rwh1000 »

Hi
I took my crank in to get it reground and he has told me i need new main berings and cant do the job till i have them.
Ive asked around but nobody seems to sure as to what i actually need without over complicating things for me!
Does anybody know exactly what i should be looking for (and who supplys them)?

Depends on how much he needs to cut the crank. The bearings have a smaller Internal diameter when the crank mains are ground. So your choice of bearing size depends on how much he needs to machine off and whether it has been done before. If he doesn't know the standard sizes of 912 bearings I'd go elsewhere (a specialist). The bearings may also be larger on the outside if the case has previously been machined so needs to matche to both the ground crank size and the current case size. Hence worth speaking to a specialist.

Thanks Bruce and in nice plain English - don't know why the engineer I went to couldn't tell me that.
Camperco thanks that would be good unfortunately I'm 'up north' - I was in Banbury last month! If I get stuck up here I might be on another road trip!

Where are you up north? I have been put in contact with a great specialist near Halifax/Huddersfield who is well rehearsed with 356's and has prepped a few cars for a friend.

If you are up north speak to Mike Bainbridge. He is on the forum. As said you need to measure your case and know the available sizes. Best to have this bit done by an expert
