I am looking for someone to rebuild a 911SC 915 gearbox, synchros gone. I am able to transport it in the UK

Any recommendations of companies or indeed individuals who do a good job at a fair price?

Mike Bainbridge comes highly recommended by many. Just had mine done and should get it back in a week or two. His labour rate is very reasonable.

A fair price? Well, the parts are expensive. My 82 SC gearbox was still perfectly usable but needed over £2.5K of parts alone. As the diff was shot I went for a Quaife LSD, the price differential being ~£600 more than the standard replacement.

Budget £3.5K minimum.

Mike has done my 3.2 road car box, and my racer's special 915 twice because I can lift the clutch pedal faster than I can change gear..

Top job every time and on the 3.2 road box corrected an 'expert's' attempts they had cocked-up and refused to admit to.

Go to Mike, you won't do better and my boxes were around the 200th ones he has done.

Each box is numbered by Mike and a computer record kept.
That tells you how he approaches them.

Parts are very expensive; get it done asap or the parts bill will increase with every 'crunch' you make.

Or if it really is just a few synchros and all else is well then £1500 is enough.

Plenty of £1500 rebuilds will work well for many years given the limited mileages these cars often do.

Whilst in there, a couple of worn dog teeth and a few bearings replaced, that's all.

Sorry, but I really don't think a £1500 rebuild is possible.

Unless the mishap is a very small one I think the policy is to replace a lot of parts 'while we are in there' simply as a way to ensure they will last for a very long time due to low/gentle use.

I was prepared to pay as I wanted the boxes to last forever/my ownership and the next guy's too.

I think a 'Bainbridge Box' has a similar kudos to a 'Barry Shell' , you know it has been properly done.

I have always taken my boxes to Mike personally and he will strip it down in front of you. It takes him about 15 mins.
He will point out the gross and obvious damage parts and show you what the new/good ones look like.

It is when the main bearings fall out of the housings (alloy case) that you heart will sink as the repair is difficult...

My mag-cased 915 box just needed 3rd gear synchro and a couple of dog teeth. Total cost was a bit less than that - by Jez Parsons at Carrera Performance in Horsham, and I'm happy with the results.

It's definitely possible, as ss7 proves, whether it's sufficiently thorough is something only you can decide with the advice of your mechanic. I've spent between £1200 and £3500 on advice of the bloke doing the rebuild.

Quirky things gearboxes!

My 3.2 with cooler had done 70K since a light pass many years ago and it sometime snicked going to 2nd and often bulked going to second from any gear if rushed, all a bit '915' you might say.

No whines, no crunches etc, but the knackered parts inside as well as the main case going oval almost scrapped the box!

I took the advice from a known expert in Mike, you are very much in their hands.
Most of my issues were due to the bearings moving easy in the case.

The case was repaired by a VERY well known specialist in our world and they screwed it up
(case repair) and Mike had to fix their errors as I was told to F..off because I didn't give them the whole box to repair.

In the distant past I've had my boxes re-built by others with good results, still big bills though.

Since you are in London +1 for Chris. You will get honest advice and good work. I think he rebuild his own SC gearbox last year

Mike's reputation is very good too but I think helps to use someone local that you can drop around to chat to.
