What did you do in/on/for your Porsche today?

Today i removed the blaupunkt radio and speaker from my dash and added a radio delete plate,the quest to make it lighter has begun,also changed the oil filter to the orange puralator filter,been excited about that part for ages,its the simple things.

Dropped the Mrs of shopping and went for a spin.

I went to one of my classic car club meets a joint event with the local vscc there was a fantastic turn out it was fine but cold so the guys and gals in open cars were well wraped up, lots of 20s 30s cars and two or three hot rods how do they get away with driving with no mudgards no covers over the engine and open exhausts? one V 8 had 4 pipes out each side about 600mm long. I only saw one more Porsche a 928. The old cars ranged from Austin 7 to Rolls, and including Aston Alvis Bugatti Riley Humber MG Sunbeam Morris Talbot. Two meny to list I took lots of photos, must learn to put them on, Great day and great day out even took the wife out for a spin afterwards, good start to the year.

I got the MOT for the 912 from http://www.thetestcentre.co.uk in New Cross. I highly recommend them. Unfortunately the test let me look under the car and I noticed a few bit of the floor that needs attend. Next I also had a look at the exhaust that went into the car less than 6 months ago and I will shocked by change already. Not sure that the answer is that for that.

Took the hotrod (and the Mrs) down to the coast for a few days. I'd always been intrigued to see why Sandbanks is so expensive. can't say I'm any the wiser! Christchurch Harbour / Mudeford though we thought was beautiful

Got back to the hotel and parked with some younger family members!

after about 3 years thought it was about time I updated the original slightly textured leather I did on the wheel to the more accurate smooth....

Out with the old and in with the new (well, older really...)

Finally got it out onto the road for the first time in 8 weeks , having been away or not keen on the weather or waiting for the road salt to be washed away !

......but I started the process 3 days ago with a failed attempt to start it . Turned over but would not fire . I am so used to engine management systems and fuel injection and 12 volt electrics , so stale fuel + carburettors + slow turn starter turn over is now beyond my skill set . It was not always so but after a few decades you forget how to do things.

So day 1 ended with battery being put back on conditioner , car being left in its lock-up and me retreating to a warm place . The smell of fuel suggested that I had at least persuaded some to reach the Zenith float chambers.

Day 2 , went to the lock-up , got the drivers handbook out , followed the instructions for 'cold start' , and bingo , started first turn . Shot black particulates out from both exhaust tail pipes , slow lumpy tickover . However it then started to rain , and as Central London traffic had already turned cloggy , decided to let it run for a bit in the garage until the oil temp gauge moved up a bit , bit of revving up but nothing too neighbour unfriendly. Switched it off , battery back on conditioner , resolved to return next morning and go for a run whatever conditions were like.

Day 3 , go to the lock-up , remove battery conditioner , start up first turn , back it out , some banging from exhaust.
Drove out onto the street , more banging , reluctance to exceed 3000 rpm ,but passed the stop start test at traffic lights , no stalling , tickover steadied up , confidence building that roadside recovery would not be needed . Head out on A4 , put a 10 litre dash of fresh BP 97 octane in , proceed to M4 , exercise 3rd gear up to 80 mph , now running up and down 3000-4500 rpm smoothly . Turn round , go back to lock-up , avoid the odd kamikaze move by white vans and taxis . Job done
