New member from Hertfordshire, any 912 owners locally ?

Morning all,

I'm buying a 1969 912 from the west coast. Im looking for advice from other 912 drivers. I have a load of photo's and video from the seller that I could do with your comments on which I'll post later today. Any recommendation of shipping would be good. Currently being quoted about £2,100 including picking the car up and taking to LA, but excluding vat @ 5%. (about £750). Shipmycar, Kingstown etc.

Looking to pick your brains at first and hopefully enjoying going for spin once the weather is good again.

Any idea what modifications and costs are required for uk market ?ie: Headlamps, seatbelts, mirror ?

Welcome. Kingston always seem to come up tops in the recommendations.

I used Kingston on this side and they were good. I've only done it once so I'm not an expert but you don't have to do both sides through the same person. I imported a car from LA. The seller agreed to drive to the shipper (maybe you can talk them into this). Then they got the shipping quote from the US side and I had to decide on who was going to receive the car on the UK side. For the shipping you have to decide if you are sharing a container or not (I shared one) or have it out in the open. I'm not sure this is as bad as it sounds. Then you have insurance for the trip. I didn't bother but maybe I should of. The prices do defer for the cost of getting it from the dock to you and I used Kingston too because they were competitive. That said you can let someone like Kingston do all that for you but maybe it it will not hurt to investigate Britta Hamilton at <britta@calship.com> was the shipper of my car on the US side.

Seems like you can get a BTI for the car "but excluding vat @ 5%. (about £750). Shipmycar, Kingstown etc." 5% is actually the duty if you don't get an BTI you will pay another 20% on top of that.

seatbelts : You can fix lap belts to get you on the road. I've bought some of ebay for £40
Headlamps : I might be tempted to take it for an MOT test to see if they fail before changing. If not Roger Bray is good for parts and even I can take off and change a headlamp
mirror : I think you only need to have a rear view mirror. An original will be harder to find but just get a regular one then enjoy your car while you sort it out?

Hopefully it goes as smoothly as my import did. I turned up, checked the oil, turned the fuel cock on (356) started the car and drove away!

I can tell you who not to use.

I didn't use Kingston, and in retrospect I should have. They are more expensive than others, but highly regarded.

I'm both in Hertfordshire and I have a 912 and a 964, Harpenden actually as is Jonno, another top bloke with a couple of lovely motors.

Great news, This will be my first vintage porsche so the more advice I can get the better.

I have friends in Harpenden and Wheathampstead so i'am often over your way. I live in Royston so about 30 mins away. Would be good to meet up once the 912 arrives and is ready.

It's not your 912 that i've seen at Redbourn Golf club ???
