Just back from Aberdovey for half term. Lots of great twisty roads. Perfect for a 912!

Not the same heads John. They need some special magic before they can be reused.
I've got some options now regards motor spec so I will update the other thread I started to ask people's thoughts on what might be the best way to go.

A present for my 1975 914 arrived today from Germany, the second original style door mirror in very nice shiny chrome. Not standard to have one each side? It's my 914 not yours.

Checked over car before heading for Largs tomorrow, and discovered leaking fuel pipe.

Now sorted and ready to go.

Splashed my way over to Petersfield and spent several hours with the sort of proper old school motor engineer who knows his way around Weber carburettors.

Found 70bhp down the back of the sofa, and sorted out various running issues.
The return trip was even more biblical, but the car is transformed.

It was using lots of fuel, the idle wasn't very stable and it was hanging onto revs off the throttle.haasad wrote:I read "found 70p down the back of the sofa"![]()

The fuelling out of the box was out, and they had also suffered from a bit of fiddling by a not-very-expert (not me or any DDKer). On the first run on the dyno we stopped at around 5000rpm as it was rich in the low/mid range but very lean at that point and getting leaner, and the big needle showed around 95bhp at the wheels. After going up a couple of jets on the top end and down 4 on the mid/low range air-correctors (so that'd be why I'd been getting 10-15mpg), plus a slight timing adjustment and a change to the idle bypass* we ended up with ~165bhp@just under 6000rpm at the wheels on horribly sooted up plugs.
It's something I should have done earlier, but you live and learn. Worth thinking on if you've had an engine rebuilt.

Finally managed persuade my friendly local OPC to sell me one of these, and splashed over to Portsmouth to pick it up:
