Yes agreed. temporary measure. I've ordered some new connectors. However, for the life of me I couldn't find black female connectors on ebay but only red! I'm going to have to play a visit to a electrical shop.

Hi Neil
The red colour for the female spade connectors relates to cable size. Red=1.5mm2 Blue=2.5mm2. You might find black at a Maplins electronics.

Thank you that makes seems.

Unfortunately I've just got a call from the people at Broadway Electronics to say my fan (which I left attached to the dynamo) has arrived bent! I thought I had packaged well and we put Fragile all over the box and it had this way up on it. The chap said that putting Fragile on the box makes the couriers throw it around more!! I must wait to see if they have damaged the shaft of the dynamo!! Last time I didn't have any trouble. Feckers!!

If it was damaged 'in transit' to the extent that the fan was bent, then surely there would have been external signs on the packaging - if so, why did they accept it without checking the contents ?

Good point. They have promised photos which haven't arrived yet but said the box was delivered on the wrong side and fan had cut through two cardboard boxes!

Stupidly I only said it was worth £100 on the delivery order! I must of been having a weak moment.

I've spoken to them again and the fan is damaged beyond repair so they are trying to call in some favours and get one for me.

I've found this? I'm guessing that vw and porsche cooling fans are the same?

Certainly looks very similar to a 912 / 356 one advertised?

Generator rebuilt and heading back to me with a fan attached. I managed to source a fan from Chris Mannion who was kind enough to drop it off at Broadway for me. As he needed a 6v generator rebuilding. He also stayed around to tell Rob, at Broadway, how to attach the fan correctly as he had seen a few done badly so all good. However, I think that Rob mentioned it because he didn't like being told how to suck eggs :)

In addition oil filter canister and oil filler cleaner and ready for pick up tomorrow. Then I just need to spray them.

Hopefully, I will have the car back together for the w/e? What could go wrong!

Since the last post

-> I had to take the generator and fan back get a shim added and it retighted

-> I've replaced the oil pessure sensor as it was leaking

-> I've take the car to Max at Revival to check the oil cooler and seals as I think there may be a leak there

So far he has discovered

-> clutch worn and oil on it. I suspected that this might be on the way out so I asked Max to check
-> breather grommet on the other cylinder head gone. This maybe the cause of the leak!
-> Previous engine builder had drilled some holes in the heads??
-> They haven't even got to the oil cooler yet!

PS I've won tickets to the preview day at Goodwood and noticed that they are displaying the new Targa so I've send this cheeky email to Porsche UK! What is the worst that can happen?

"I was lucky enough to win tickets for Goodwood preview day on the 26 Jun. I received the tickets yesterday and noticed, in the letter you sent, that there would be a new 911 Targa on display. I’m planning to travel down to Goodwood in my 1967 soft windowed Targa (912 #38 off the line). Any interested in having my car next to your new Targa? Might make an interesting old v new display? Probably a bit late in the day to be changing your display but thought I would ask in case you are interested.

Oh dear never open a box if you don't want to know what is inside!

-> Oil cooler leaking so needs replacing
-> main & pulley seals need replacing
-> push rod tubes and seals need replacing
-> exhaust will need to be removed to do the above and will probably fall apart

Two options I'm considering at the moment

1)
-> replace oil cooler and leave the rest as is and look to get another 2+ years out of the engine/exhaust then consider a proper rebuild

2)
-> replace oil cooler, exhaust and other seals. However, this makes me wonder if given the state of the outside of the engine whether we will have to revisit the inside in a few years anyway?

Rightly so, Max is placing the decision with me but he is so laid back I'm having trouble telling if he think that solution 1 is silly. I'm struggling as I want to make the car right but can't connect unlimited funds on it!

depends how bad the leak at the flywheel seal is .. if its too bad you could get oil contamination on your clutch plate which lead to it slipping etc ( which sounds like is already happening )

Is the engine out of the car anyway ? Non of these jobs are big jobs if the engine is out

Option 2

As James says once the engine is dropped they're not massive jobs and don't really have a major influence on how the internals currently are

The engine is out and as you said I guess the flywheel seal will have to be done. I guess I wasn't clear it's whether to replace the cylinder seals which probably means a new exhaust. Which a quick check on the www is suggesting Thurbo Thomas at £550 + vat! I'm wondering what the options are!

It's the triple team of the problems new clutch, oil cooler and exhaust!

I will try to post a photo when I get home but Max's words were

"If you do go this route, bear in mind that your exhaust is hanging on by a thread and may fall apart when removed...."

Sounds like you need a new exhaust regardless of which route you take
