That is a great idea - might work for my 914 boot lid. Where did you get it from Chris? A quick google for spring hatch and queen spring didnt bring up many UK options.

Thats a cool idea. Its a marine part made by plastimo, almost any good chandlery will be able to order. I 've also seen them used on camper conversions so maybe another source. I think they are also known as spring or sprung struts ?

Same thing Andy, but thats only 11cm......You need to use the longer 12 '' version

The Output Flanges on the Gearbox are still causing a problem, basically I cannot get them to fit back in and turn freely...but the end recess has now been lathed down to 10.0mm to match the original Flanges...




I have a feeling that the Spider Gear has dropped inside.

So after abit of head scratching and looking at parts drawings I tried to tease the Spider Gear back in place by holding a torch at one end and shining it through...no joy.....




So should I remove the Diff and see what is going on inside ? How hard is it to remove the Diff ???




Actually its quite straight forward....

Diff plate off.....




And slide out the Diff....blimey its heavy !




Once on the Workbench the problem was obvious. The centre pin was out of line, and no amount of jiggling would ever get it back in place.....




One interesting thing though is that part number 15 below is not in my Diff ?...




If part number 15 is not there, then the only way I can see it going back together is that the Stretch bolts locate into the pin, part number 5

MR BAINBRIDGE, IS THIS CORRECT ???...




If this is correct then I think that is makes sense to fit the Diff plate and the Output Flange on the work bench.....then re-install into the Gearbox as one complete unit.....and then install the other Output Flange on the other side. This way the pin and Spider Gears will stay in the correct place...



I used to the opportunity to look everything over and all appears to be ok. I cleaned and reassembled everything and also cleaned out the housing in the Gearbox....I guess this is why people say only remove one Output Flange at a time

But I think it all makes sense now...

Bolt 14 locates (screws) into part 3 the sun gears. Mike will confirm but I would think that 15 must be fitted to the diff. The bolt 14 clamps the sun gear to the output flange if that makes sence.

Thanks John, thats what I thought.....makes sense. I cannot understand why part 15 is not be fitted, even if the Gearbox had been rebuilt it is such a distinct piece that it would be obvious if not fitted. Part 5 does have a hole in, and the end of the Bolts 14 have nipples which locate into the hole. From what I can see these nipples would foul on part 5 if they did not go into the hole. I have some other bolts which have a flat end (no nipple) which would indicate that pin 16 would fit in the hole if these bolts were to be used with part 15.....

Hmmm ? I will call the Sage

EDIT: Looking at the drawing above again, the bolts 14 are flat ended without the nipples.

Porsche improved the Design to this, which is alot stronger...




Need to Speak to Mr Bainbridge to see if he has some parts to update the Diff.....parts 3 and 1, and maybe 5.

Yes, you have got the simplified diff. Please do update it for peace of mind.
The parts you need can be sourced from a 914 box.
