Oh……and the car as well. Phew just got to the end of this Jamie, love the thread, love the car.
Went for a drive in Ian Ganney's 912 the other day and for an old Volksie fan from wayyyyyyy back, it was like heaven, I mean I love my 911, but I think I NEED a 912 as well……..
Wife is coming toward me with something long and sharp now……eek !

Got this back from the platers today. Generally pretty happy with the result - the finish looks excellent, but I've noticed a few bits are missing, namely one window winder spring, and the two caps that hold the spring in place on the bonnet and hood latches (are the aluminium or something - could they have dissolved?).
I realise some of the items in here didn't really need plating, but I couldn't help myself.




Now, can anyone tell me where all this shite goes?

Yep, your bits have dissolved. I also lost the cap in the hood release to the platers. Not sure about the spring though, steel isn't it?

Oh crap. I knew they would dissolve - I read something in a thread not long ago (was it yours?). I thought I might have taken them off and stored them somewhere safe, but my memory doesn't go back more than three hours, and that was over a month ago.
The spring is steel. I knew I'd lose something in the process - there's a lot there.

One a 1968-one-year-only note, somewhere in my mind I recollect that this car had Sierra Madre 1968 door panels fitted. Are you happy with them? Looks/quality-wise. I have a 1968 912 which needs new doorcards.

Sorry - not this one! I'm pretty certain mine were original to the car - the elastic on the pockets is knackered, and someone has cut speaker holes in them.

Got that 'everything in my life is broken' thing going on in my head, so decided to ignore the car for a few weeks and concentrate on sorting out a few other easier jobs. None of these jobs turned out to be that easy.
Back on it this evening - fitted new bearing and seals to my steering rack, reassembled and adjusted according to some workshop manual scans that a guy on Pelican kindly sent me. Looks good, feels even better.

I did buy a pair of Turbo Tie Rods and boots for this when I was in the US a few months ago, but I appear to have left them there. Arses. So for now, no tie rods, and boots made out of latex gloves

Flew up to Scotland for a job earlier this month. Not much going on last weekend, so the girlfriend and I took the plane up to the Outer Hebrides. I like places on the edge of places, and this is definitely an 'edge' place.

This is Sollas beach, Northern Uist. You can just land on it, and there is no-one there. Literally no-one. Except a shite-tonne of washed-up jellyfish, and a friendly bloke on a quad bike, who happened to know the man who was, at this same point in time, working on my engine. 15 miles north on the island of Lewis, John Maher had been doing witchcraft on my 912's cylinder heads.
Engine Dude sent John Maher's before and after figures through this evening. I now have an engine that flows 23% more air when the exhaust and inlet valves are fully open. 23% gain, using only stock VW parts, experience and genius. It is amazing.
Unfortunately 15 miles is as close as I could get - there's nowhere in the south of Lewis where you can land an aircraft. Would have been cool to meet John Maher and see him at work.
