Hi Guys and Gals,

I know many of you from PP and Early 911S Registry. I am contemplating a job in the Middlesbrough area of the UK and wanted to check out the scene. I am headed over for a meeting later this month.

Currently I have a 71 911SWT, a Suby TT powered 914 and 72 911 Coupe project that is very early in its rust ablation stages. Most likely, the 914 would not make the trip.

Are there any early car owners in this area? Are there any good driving or B roads in the area? I am not sure what I am getting into and if it is worth shipping the car and project. I am not even sure if I can find a garage to store them. Its fun considering a move to the UK - yet there are way too many questions.

I'm not far from there ( about 30 miles away) ... what industry are you in ? Are you bringing family ? Anything you want to know about the area , please ask

Ref Middlesborough, it's not somewhere you'll want to live, but just a few miles out & you are into some really nice areas + the North Yorkshire Moors etc on its doorstep . Within 20 miles in different directions you will have some of the best driving roads in the UK

We have a small, but pretty active group of `DDK'ers up in the North east too

Welcome. I can echo James' comments I've been to Middlesborough once and it was enough. However, the people were quite friendly.

James perhaps you can recommend some nice villages to look at?

I will be flying in next week arriving Wed afternoon and leaving Thursday afternoon. It will be a short trip. If meetings go well... Who knows what will happen.

How hard is it to live in a city area and have garage space? What about renting industrial space? Just trying to get a handle on whether or not a project car can come along or if I store it in the US.

I don't know Middlesbrough, but apart from a few exceptions most UK cities are relatively small and therefore unless you really want to there's no need to live in the centre. So if you live a little way out from the centre you'll probably find some nicer places to live with space/garaging. If you really want to live city-centre, then whilst you won't have as much space as in the suburbs, it's not like London, where garage space is like gold dust. HTH

Middlesbrough centre is probabally not really somewhere you would choose to live and don't think of it as a pituresque English city like York, Durham , Newcastle etc.. although this might depend on where your coming from.

Its a town of high unemployment ( almost 15% , 2nd worst place in the UK after Nottingham) . The advantage is it is cheap to live there & the people are great, but within a few miles you can be in some loverly towns & villages.

There is a lot of industry on Teesside, but you'll find most live slightly away.


Units can be had quite cheaply, but you'll not have any trouble finding houses with garages etc ( non of these will be on par with the size of US houses , garages though )

Middlesbough doesn't measure up to being a city. It's a large town in UK terminology. Circa 135k population covering 20sq miles (half the size of an similarly populated city in Texas).

What you will notice, is house and especially garages are a lot smaller as land is less plentiful.

Thank you for the descriptions. I got the feeling that Middlesbrough proper was highly industrial. Between the port, river, and other areas its easy to determine. It looks like there are many small towns in the area. I just need to see if I can find one on the beach. This would please my wife.

I have been to Europe enough to know that city living and garage space probably do not go together very well.

I will certainly know more next week after a few meetings and visiting the area. It's going to be a fun trip.

Saltburn by the Sea is the nearest nice beach town, complete with North sea ( cold ! ) surfing community
