The other night, my girlfriend was concerned that the stainless steel pan she was using to cook our dinner was a strange grey colour inside, and smelled a bit odd when heated up. Dunno how that happened...

Anyway... I just received this photo from engine dude...

For reasons that we could only conclude are the past result of something metal going through cylinder 1, my heads' combustion chambers had been re-profiled somewhat from original. If you look back a few pages, there are some photos, and you will notice that whoever did it must have used a pickaxe. Dude measured a difference of 6cc between the four chambers, with no.1 being the worst.

The Dude has polished the axe-marks out and now we are left with this thing of beauty. The CC of the chambers has been calculated using a silicone mould (I listened, understood the principle of this, but couldn't visualise the practice), and as you can see, they are now within 0.2cc, or 0.26%, of each other. I'm delighted. Dude isn't 100% happy since Captain Pickaxe didn't leave enough metal in there for him to carve the signature secret chamber profile he uses on his drag engines, but he's going to try get as close as he can. The surface of the chamber will then be made un-shiny again.

The plan from here is to have the heads fitted with bigger inlet valves.

What this engine really needs

is a forged crank.

It will be a shame to hide that within an engine.

Scat? Pauter Machine?

From what I understand, Scat has been making new 356/912 cranks for Porsche for some years now.

Hotel bathroom! Should I bring it home with me?

EDIT: I originally wrote the crank was from NLA Parts / Stoddart. It's not - it came from AA Pistons. It's 4340 billet chromoly and was a bargain providing it turns out to be good. Engine dude said it looks identical to the one Scat sell, if you catch his drift.

He still needs to run his fingers over it to check it's kosher, though. If it's not, second option is the crank from Scat.

Yes - shame to hide it, but nice for me to know it's in there.

Hi Jamie,

Love this thread, the humour is great.

Nice direction re the SCAT crank, JE psitons and Carillo rods. Whats your ultimate aim PS wise and who is the "engine dude"?

My unofficial aim is 110bhp, but The Dude isn't pandering to my bullshit numbers game and says the engine will be sweet, with the torque coming in at X-rpm and the torque coming in at so-and-so-RPM. I can't remember the details, but I trust his judgement. "Power; Adequate" as Rolls-Royce used to write in their brochures.

The Dude has asked to remain anonymous as he builds engines for his own psychological wellbeing, and wants to keep it that way. Having been raised in the engineering wilderness, he was captured by The Man and made to work at a desk during the week. His owners fly him around the world, making him perform for money. Every weekend he is transported back to Surrey and permitted to roam free amongst the dial gauges, stretch bolts and torque wrenches of his native homeland.
