Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project
OK I mentioned a couple of posts back that there was a bit at the rear that I wasn't sure of. Well here it is - the piece I've got my hand behind - some sort of strengthening piece

Here's another view from the side

I've sussed out how I'm going to repair it - I'll cut out from the inside to get at it.
What I need to know is - how does this fix to the floor? The bottom bit is corroded away so I can't see if it had a flange on it or not.
I'm thinking of putting a flange onto the bottom of it when I repair it, and plug-welding that to the floor repair piece. Does that sound right?
Cheers
Mark

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project
Ace Man Barry answered this a few cars ago. Been so many cars across his Cellette so cant recall whose car it was, maybe Darren's?
The inner panel comes all the way down to sandwich between the floor and inner wing flanges iirc. It was literally decades ago when I did mine (the 73T was just 15 years old) but I welded new lower sheet to the original and welded to the floor flange on one side, other side was ok.

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project
Thanks for that - so presumably there's a slight step in the inner wing flange to allow for this - there's no change in the floor repair panel

That is so, I hope Barry will drop-in and confirm.
I recall how hard it was to spot weld through three thicknesses at the time and ended up plug welding it to the floor flange then the self made repair panel (under the heater tube) plug welded to that double thickness.
I think Gary did the same.

Maybe! To be honest I'm not entirely certain what I'm looking at in the picture. Sladey do you have any taken from slightly further out to give some context?911hillclimber wrote: I think Gary did the same.

There are three vertical panels by the torsion bar tube.
First is the inner wing by the rear seat, actually inside the car.
Second is the rusted panel we have here
Third is the rear inner wing panel.
The middle panel of this trio rusts at the bottom. Iirc it makes its way behind the heater tube and runs down to the floor and inner wing flanges.

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project
OK so here's a slightly wider shot to show the area I'm talking about

Then I've move in a bit closer and moved the camera down so I'm looking up at the relevant bit
I've circled the bit I'm asking about

OK now moved in for a close up and also I've moved the camera towards the front of the car, so I'm looking back at the bit in question

Any pics or descriptions of how that attached to the floor and/or inner inner sill much appreciated

Yes, that's the area I thought it was. I think it comes to the floor and is sandwiched but I repaired mine and butt welded to the floor.

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project
Yes, that's the pic I remembered but I was wrong in thinking it was a 3 layer flange, it simply gets spot welded to the floor.
Easy!

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project
Small update - I've spent the weekend on it but limited progress. However I have turned a corner in that I'm finally starting to weld stuff
I've put the floor repair section into place and clamped it there, and marked out where I need to cut the floor

This also means when I'm repairing that middle flange thing I know how it will fit onto the floor.
I've cut out the inner sill and that middle flange thing

I found a couple of small holes near the anti roll bar mount, so I've had to deal with those first. They're done now and the next job is making that middle flange thing
I also picked up one of these little puppies over the weekend

You can't have too many things to cut with!
