Without the original engine and with a messed up body ...... it's going to cost a lot of time and effort to make this a nice car. Someone will pay a lot for it nonetheless...

So it went under the hammer today, Sold for £30,475 inc. premium, I reckon it's a pretty good price. I thought it would go for more looking at the current trend. Lots of headroom for a decent restoration.

Anyone on here buy it?

Just found the market place discussion. Scary photos, it'll still be worth a bundle once finished.

Was there - persuaded Mr. Bonhams to lend me an 8mm socket and I took off the kneepad. Number corresponds with the paint tag and the Reg No. - 305328S. My mate has a photo of the stamping and I'll post when I get it.
Dug out the engine from the box - 960043. Also the carbs, but they're IDA's not IDS's. There is no bulkhead at all - I mean no bulkhead AT ALL, and no floors or front suspension pan at all. The centre tunnel is resting on the ground. The front suspension is only in place with the upper strut brackets.

Anyway it was bought by a nice gent called John, who I met and encouraged to join and post on DDK. He has a good personal plan for the car, but he is going to need a lot of cash, resolve and help! I said DDK was the place for the last one, possibly the last two - but as to the former, he's on his own.

But the Fangio Merc went for £17.5m plus premium plus VAT ....
Did include a lovely transporter though ....

I've got some of the original press photos of this car when it was new and realised it was still around in a sorry state about 6/7 years ago. I even wrote to the dvla to try and get in touch with the owner, but got short shift from them. I hope the car is restored the way it deserves. It does look poorly and at a guess there must be at least £30k-40k in metal work alone to repair what's left. Lets hope we don't see a wanted ad for a nice 912. I know it's probably the most cost effecting solution if the body is as bad or worse than it looks, but it'll never be that car again. What a dilemma, the legend of Murphy's hammer!

Oh I think you will - and a RHD 912 at that. Call me defeatist if you like, but from what I saw today apart from the dash I can see nothing of the rest of the monocoque (not the outer panels) that you could save. There is simply NO solid metal to cut back to anywhere on the shell that I could see - even the roof has that awful Webasto aftermarket roof cut into it. I didn't inspect the rear as well as the (non-existant!) front, so perhaps there's better news back there, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Don't misunderstand I'd love to be proved a wus on this one, and to have to follow a thread showing how it can be done, but IMHO this is a reshell, with the dash and kneepad number grafted in, and the paint tag re-installed. What you do about the chassis number is another debate.

The bonnet, engine lid and perhaps the doors could be refurbished, but they are likely not from the original car. Certainly I could not find any stamped numbers - although the inside of the engine lid is all underseal.

It's going to end up like HMS Victory - they estimate something like 20% of what you visit in Portsmouth was actually at Trafalgar. It will still be a nice (expensive!) car with a lot of history and a neat Reg. No. when it's done.

Anyway I think the new owner is going to take a little time to consider his options, but really it seems he's doing this car to give focus to impending retirement, and for his own use and retention - not to fix, spin and sell. As long as that's the case he should get our full support and assistance I think. He is demonstrably braver than me!

My God, I'm pretty enthusiastic sometimes when I get myself into things, but I've never seen anything like it! Looks like the ARB is holding the front end together.

It only ran for 12 years (came off the road in 78) I can't believe it's in such a bad way. It must have been stored badly for a long time. What a huge shame, it has been left to get like this.

The shell was in a field I believe and engine in the barn or something like that. It's been quite a while since I talked to the chap who rediscovered it. It would have been just a worthless old 911 when taken off the road I guess so ending up in a field is not that suprising. Shame I agree but I am glad it has been brought to light as I have wondered for a long time where this car had gone too. Looking forward to its restoration which I am sure will be done the right way.

IDA carbs would be correct on an early 67S I believe.
The bonnet looks to be later than 67. I did originally think 72/73 but could be earlier.

Regards
Mike

That is the discussion now. What is the right way? IMO the shell is gone, there is not a re-usable panel apart from, possibly, the dash with the kneeroll and the chalk written VIN on the dash top. Where does a reshell become acceptable? In this case there is no option. It may be possible to graft in other identifying marks to new/replacement panels and whatever is done the shell will need a VIN stamped in it for legal reasons. This is a quandary that I have pondered in the past on a similar car.

Stand corrected - was going by Garry's 67S. Learn something new every day. :)
