Mick, great work and fantastic to see the progress.. and that the brick pile is still there, good that some things don't change :wink:

I'm with you on the Scandi countries, beautiful places to visit any time of year, great pictures and captions! :)

This looked like an early 50's Volvo to me so googled around that and think it's PV 445 coachbuilt by Grip

Thanks Mitch. I have to say my photography in this case was distracted by both the fine legs and red mini skirt just visible behind the car (she had passed close by me a few minutes before) only to be overtaken by the absolute stunner just visible in front of the windscreen, who cost me a bruised rib a few minutes later as she came close by in the other direction. That I got the photo at all is a miracle.......

Yes, sorry Keith, it has been a bit slow of late what with the holiday and all. Got a few days away this coming week and a possible long distance walk the week after that, but after that I promise to pick up the pace.... :)

Blimey O'Reilly not sure I have enough plastic pipe for that lot! - I was thinking of just a single pipe out through a hole in the wing somewhere.

Seems like a lot of vapour emission control overkill to me. However now I can see the hole it is supposed to go out through I think I'll fit some form of filter and tie in the brake reservoir overflow to make a neat job. Thanks Charles. See you tomorrow when I can take a more detailed look at it.

Anyone else gone for a simpler solution?

Just refitted the sunroof (with new seals) and the windscreen - thanks to my assistants as it is most definitely a two handed job. Only one minor piece of ally trim out of the seal groove this time - quickly rectified with the patent device (see Doctors car thread if you are ever in that boat).

Anyway ...... I digress.

The principal learning I wanted to pass on was that we found that at the top and bottom in the middle when the screen was in place the seal/trim just would not sit flat and square. It looked like there was something inside the (new, Porsche) seal. Anyway after a bit of fishing with a angled pick.....

Two bits in the top and one I fished out this morning from the bottom. Rubber, circular in profile, about 4mm dia. Now what are they doing in there? Did Franz in parts think he'd have ein Lachen one day? They were in the groove that the screen slots into. Puzzling - but anyway if you have the same experience have a fish about in the groove.

Looks nice now its sitting flat and the sunroof is attached

Have now started fitting the sound-proofing and the rear parcel shelf and a battery isolator and the rear seat 'underlay'....

Now looking for a replacement 2-stage heated rear screen as mine appears to be 2/3 'gerfukt'. :(

Time for an update before the summer holiday shutdown. Back from a few days golf in sunny Scotland and a 'walk' along the West Highland Way with my 'let's press on a bit further' mate - we completed the 95 miles in lovely weather in 4 days! So after a lie down.......

First challenge was to get the rear screen fitted. As detailed in this other post, I found the original screen was 2/3 gerfucktenstein, which was disappointing as it meant I couldn't keep the PCHK Championship sticker in the window, nor could I get a reliable s/h replacement, so the credit card took another bashing for a new Porsche screen (Made in Peru :shock: ). Anyway it, and the associated wiring, went in really well. I had researched as much as I could here, on Early911S and Pelican. See here for more details if you face the same task....

So first, trim the B post, add some soundproofing like in the swb restoration, and in with the newly recovered (by me - product of my trimming course) rear quarter panels and panel tops

Bit of wrinkle on the LH side as the slot on the B post was very tight. Smoothed it out later with some gentle heat.

So with the rear screen in the usual Battle of Rear Quarter Window Rubbers could commence. Out with blunt screwdriver, plastic spatula and strong fingers and EVENTUALLY they were on. Fitted to the car easily this time - getting the small socket head bolts into the B post can sometime be a pain, but not this time :)

Despite its very tired appearance I have opted to retain the original 71/72 Weltmeister sticker in the RH rear quarter window.

Then on with the doors - RH first. THe usual bit of jiggling, shoving and adjusting as the hinges were unbolted, not the pins removed. Also I had to adopt a patent method of making sure the bottom (non) captive plate for the lower hinge bolts didn't go tumbling down inside - it came loose in the new Porsche A pillar in final assembly!). Anyway it fitted REALLY WELL :) :)

So then a lot of faffing about testing and fitting the electric window mechanism I had acquired, and making them run smoothly up and down in the re-anodised window frames (thanks Mr. Moss). But again all worked out well and that's one side just about done

Not so great a fit with the bonnet to wing or bonnet to scuttle profiles, but more of that later, but first over to the other side........

So on with the LH door, same as RH. Fit to rear wing and outer sill again REALLY good, with very little faffing required.

So in with the window winder and frame

Before fitting the wing I had to fit the two-tone fanfare horns. I saw in another thread the brackets were NLA, and that the best (only?) source was a bloke in Australia! Sod that - they are only bent 2mm mild steel plate after all. So after 30min of fabrication and some primer and paint ...

To do this you need some of the 25mm wide, 2mm bar you can see in the photo, and the tools shown (plus a hacksaw and a vice)

Might need a bit of adjustment to clear the wing and bumper as I had to guess the measurements... So on with the LH wing. Bit of fiddling to get the petrol filler cap release tube in place as you fit the wing. One trial fit and then on she goes. This one needed quite a bit of 'easing' to fit the profile of the door, but with a little help we got there in the end. The gap a the top near the scuttle is not good enough though and for some reason the wing edge is a bit 'raggy'. Not sure why, or what in the painting process could result in this (hi-build primer?). Anyway as you can also see some idiot forgot to fill the holes where the PO had fitted at least one wing mirror :oops: :oops: (this door was off a LHD donor, so this was the drivers door) ... so this door will need rework and repaint anyway. My plan is to refit the unmodified engine, do some testing and hopefully get a MoT, then take the engine back out and either rebuild or just tart it up a bit. I'll get this sorted and repainted then. Have sacked the fool who forgot to fill the holes in door...

One learning to pass on...... how to fit the inner of the two M6 bolts that attach the wing to the scuttle inside the door opening. The outer one can be started with your fingers, but unless you have a tame 5 year old who can (and will!) get his/her hand in there, getting the inner one started can be a right pain. I faffed about for ages on the swb with the trusty bit of fuel pipe trick, but if the pipe is big enough to fit the M6 bolt in the end, then it's too big to go straight towards the hole though the small gap between door and wing. The answer IS......

Wrap some tape around a long thin screwdriver so the hose will hold on the end. Fit bolt and washers into the other end. Fit through the gap ... and it's easy.

So then back to the bonnet. Despite the fact it's a new Porsche bonnet fitted to two new Porsche wings, I couldn't get it to sit flat and even to the scuttle (too close even at max adjustment) and both wing profiles were low to the bonnet by about 4mm in the middle on the RH and 2 mm on the LH when the top and bottom edges were flat. First step - take the hinges off and lay the bonnet flat on the seal. Fit much, much better, and obvious that the hinges had been much modified with lots of filing out of holes in the brackets. LH wing profile now spot on, and the 'bow' up of the bonnet max 2mm in the middle on the RH when flat to the wing at top and bottom. Now I'm holding Charles' gulf blue bonnet in storage until he can collect, so we laid that on next

Thanks Charles .... anyway same result. Also tried the old original bonnet - same result. So a bit a gentle leverage was applied and to my surprise it was relatively easy to get the wing to flex by the required amount. I left the bolt in the very bottom edge and the next screw tight in place and the top screw and the two screws in the scuttle, and just eased up the lower edge of the wing flange (not the wing itself) with a pry bar. My assistant tightened the wing attachment screws as we went. Relaid bonnet - fits really well. Now I just need to get a spare set of hinges out and see if they are better, before fettling the ones I have.

Lastly the rear lid went on and the blower gubbins and its Weltmeister strut brace went back in. Under bonnet now finished apart from the 'trim'

In fact they are a bit big despite the fact I've used an original rear seat soundproof rubber moulding, so I might need to 'rework' them a bit!
Just need front bumper, seats, seat belts and an engine......
