Build a classic 911 Pre73 from zero to new

Post by juankimalo »

I've seen Autoatlanta's website and was lurking about the PET

What I saw was that you can purchase all the interior/exterior body panels/frame, etc

My question is:

Is it possible to build a "new 911" from zero using all the new pieces?

I don't ask if it would be legal legal or not. Just to know if It's possible technically. Only was thinking about it.

Is this board I could see fantastic restorations. Cars too damaged. And Canford dissambled the whole body.
If you can weld and rebuild cars such those which seem to be recovered from the deep ocean, I think that an expert bodyshop, could make it possible...

Just curiosity

There several 73 panels that aren't available from Porsche, most importantly the front and rear bulkheads and the cant rails. We are restoring a car that needs almost every other panel, but also needs the cant rails, it needs a set of jigs that are very hard to come by to assemble the roof/door structure. Cost also becomes a major factor, a complete shell would cost around £50K to get built before paint.

Nick, what are cant rails, not a term I've come across before...

They normally have a U in them and they're very hard to fit! :wink:

It's not a spelling mistake ;)

It's the metal body section that forms the rain gutter, the top of the door shut where the seal is fitted, running from the top of the A post to the top of the rear window.

Sorry but my english is not good enough to understand several technical words.

I marked this image with 2 arrows colored in blue and red

Red = ¿cant rail?

Blue = ¿Bulkhead (front and rear) ?

Unfortunately you will find lots of parts listed on websites that are available until you try to buy them, very frustrating at times.

Anything can be remade, it's just a cost of time and time usually means money. When we used to do wrc shells we used to unpick the whole shell and just the rear seat squab area used to remain on the jig, we then used to build the shell from this point, 'optimising' everything that we needed to. Bear in mind we were then fitting additional parts that had already been made with jigs so the job was as precise and easy to do as possible, this still used to take 600 hours per body shell before it went to paint.

Rebuilding 911 shells you have to hand make a lot of parts nowdays.

Hi, I case it helps the red arrows point to the inner roof rails which have not been available for some time. In the past we had to get these made. The blue arrows are the front and rear inner wings. The front inner wings we have in stock. The rears are no longer available but again we do have some. The hardest part to find for these early cars would be the front bulk head, ie behind the fuel tank, and also the dash area.
The other issue would be that even though these panels are available most have minor differences with regards to being exact to those used originally. Thus it is necessary to work on these panels even though they are brand new.

Hope this helps
