72 Hotrod - my new project

squirdan wrote:2.4S engine rebuilt with 2.2S pistons for a bit more zing and power..

has any DDKer done that? I suspect the "bainbridge special" pistons referred to in Hot 66's engine rebuild thread must be similar?

all feedback welcome: 2.4 S std / 2.4S hi-comp / 2.4 built into 2.7 RS spec / twin plug? etc

Been away for a few weeks so sorry I Havnt replied earlier.

As you'll have seen from my car's thread, my engine is basically a stock 2.4s with high comp pistons. From memory ( i need to check what actual numbers are ) stock 2.4s is cr 8.5 , If 2.2s pistons fitted result in approx 9.5. Neil's pistons took my cr to over 10 which Neil has used in cars on single plug. I'm running mine on twin plug

Performance wise it is like a stock 2.4s on steroids. Most noticeable is the increase in torque, especially when in 4th or 5th on he motorway . It is still a very revvy motor with s charactoristic delivery ( this is what I ve always loved )

Wether to build a high comp 2.7rs is a difficult one. For a daily that is used in traffic I'd be tempted to go own the 2.7 route as the cost won't be any different and the extra torque might be useful for 'lazier' driving ( I would NOT use a valuable original S case for this though ) . If the car spends its life thrashing around country roads , then there is something so entertaining about ringing the neck if a peaky S ;)

Ref crank fire .... The system I have give a wonderfully stable spark, timing advance etc. I'll be honest and say only reason I went crank fire was that it was a cost effective and reliable way of going twin plug. If I'd stayed single plug I'd have kept the original Cdi , coil and dizzy as I never had any problems with them in the past.

front bulkhead and pedal box area is now finished...lots of tricky metalwork, but I wanted this to be virtually indistinguishable from factory RHD and thats only really achievable if you use a RHD bulkhead

pedalbox... critical for a good driving position and note the scallop on the tunnel

next metalwork job I think is the rear wings

Interesting stuff...

If you are going to sue it day to day a 2.7 E engine might be worth considering... better low down torque is handy.. sure the top end suffers, however it might be a worthwhile balance..

I'm biased.. its what I have and it gives most RS's a run for their money. Better torque and not far short on top end. At least that's the story on Bob Watson's dyno.

Looking really good, wish I'd run oil lines through the sills... great idea at this stage.

A great idea for a rally car, but not so for a road car? Why did Porsche change to running them down the outside of the sill? It was probably a lot cheaper and easier to manufacture, but also dissipated a lot more heat, someone calculated that the heat loss through the sill pipes was 85% of the total loss on the trombone cooler cars. It's a nice custom design talking point, but I will keep my pipes outside.

Well... I'm using a later cooler not a trombone one so the sill pipe cooling effect is irrelevant. ESP with the holes cut in the bumper for airflow

There are only 2 poss disadvantages og going in-sill

A. Poss condensation effect.... No longer a problem with modern pipe material
B. Poss loss of jacking point

I just think it looks neater and less likely to be damaged

I agree totally that one may loose some cooling effect that the sill run pipes afford, after all they are originally brass and essentially part of the cooler in the case of a trombone unit; but use a nice efficient matrix unit and its all good news as far as I can see. Still as I said I forgot so have to keep it all out in the breeze

My 911T with a stock 3.2 in it runs outside pipes to the loop in front.(pipes off a 2.4 S).

Hot summers day in traffic and the oils gets to 212 deg F.
The cooling is from the entire length exposed, and when fitted 15 years or so ago there has been no more damage to the pipes than paint chipping since.

I should fit a 3.2 matrix/fan I think, but the battery box will have to come out to get things cooler (or ease up on my driving style..)?
