Eventually bought the 71 911 from Paul Stephehens and really happy with my first few days of owning it. Q,s What fuel + any? additives should I be using? insurance companies? recommend a garage (live in Droitwich nr. Worcester) and lastly whats the soonest social you lot will be gathering at? Cheers, Justin.

I use std unleaded - no additives. Others swear by Optimax, etc but I've not found it makes any difference to performance or fuel consumption.
Try Aon for insurance - if you do a search here you'll get lots of info on insurance/petrol/oil/etc.
Any pictures of your car ?

Agree with Andy.
I use standard grade unleaded, although I try & put in a good qulity fuel like Esso or BP, deffo NOT supermarket fuel. I read a report somewhere that explained that quality fuel was only available from the actual manufacturers ?( Esso , Bp & shell ), all other fuel was blends etc . This report also commented on Supermarket fuel, although still reaching the same BS standards, it contained a lot more rubbish / grit etc... will have to try & dig it out as it was interesting reading.
I'm also insured be AON
where are you based?

Having worked for Tescos petrol stations for over two years i can tell you that report is rubbish.. Tescos petrol comes from the same place as the others. their petrol is tested weekly by independant quality testers at random garages the staff do not know when they will arrive to do the tests. the storage tanks are also alarmed and will shut down if theres any contamination at all.
i have happily used Tescos fuel in all my porkers.
Optimax makes a huge diffrence for the modern motors but dosn't seem to show the same advantages on the older cars.

Personally I've always used Esso: but based purely on habit. What I absolutely avoid is the tiny independents: particularly those without the remote tank filling facilities (the gaggle of pipes on the side of the forecourt). I used to work for one of these outfits, and you used to fill up the tanks by physically lifting a manhole, taking of the tank's lid, and dropping in the tanker's (grubby) hose. We often used to get water and tut in the tanks after heavy rain as the manhole pit overflowed into tanks.
(I'm sure now most will be remote fill). Also the fuel often sits in the tanks for a fortnight or more.
My best corker was when I (as site manager for four of the twelve sites) dropped 7000 litres of Four Star on top of 6000 of unleaded. That was not a comfortable call to make to the owner: how to you sell 13000 litres of special 4 Star / Unleaded blend? Luckily cats had not really come in much then, so we re-labelled the pump as non-cat 2 Star (obsolete even then) and sold it of cheap: they couldn't get enough of it. Reminds me of the times the boss sold Jet (cheap and nasty) fuel through our posh Mobil site: strangely Mobil didn't think that was very funny
. Oh the stories ....

The Old Royal Oak , A3400 , Hockley Heath .
Head up the M42 , fork right on to the M40 ,take the first exit , turn left towards Hockley Heath , the pub is just a few hundred yards on the right.

I'm sure this is due to the knock sensors in modern engines backing the timing out when the engine is consuming lower octane fuel. Bung the expensive stuff in & the knock stops & the timing is advanced & you get more go.Helen wrote:Optimax makes a huge diffrence for the modern motors but dosn't seem to show the same advantages on the older cars.
As I've got points & condensor in my mechanical dizzy & a pair of carbs I don't get that luxury!
