On 70-71 914-4 you push the centre of the wiper switch located on the dash, right side of the cigarette lighter.

On 72 onwards 914-4 you pull back on the right hand steering column lever.

On all 914-6 model years you pull back on the right hand steering column switch and on 70-71 models the wipers will automatically start operating as well!

Den

If you dont have a separate switch then its likely that you need to pressurise the water bottle (like on a beetle). Not sure if there is a long tube to connect to the spare wheel or you just pump it up from a foot pump. I have an early 14 but it has an electric pump installed that runs off a separate switch.

Four cylinder 914s have a pneumatic windscreen washer system which is connected to the spare wheel.
The spare wheel will need to be pumped up to 43 psi.
It is connected to the washer bottle via a hose which screws on to the wheel valve.
The washer bottle valve also has a connection on the hose line about 10cm from the valve, made sure it is connect and the valve on the bottle is done up tight once the water level is checked.
The system is designed to stop taking air from the spare when the tyre gets to 29psi.
There is a good chance, one or more of the hose connections are leaking air, disconnect and cut back the hose a bit and reconnect and make sure the rubber sleeve is on top of the connection.
Once the water Bottle is pressurised you can disconnect the hose to the spare, if the valve is working correctly the water Bootle will stay pressurised.

Not possible do to this on 70-71 models as the steering column is different and they only have one steering column switch, which is for the indicators.

A friend has a karmann with the push button in the middle of the knob on the dash. We converted to an electric pump and managed to fit a small momentary push switch in the place of the pneumatic valve so it was operated from the standard button.. If anyone is thinking of doing the same and wants to avoid adding an extra switch I'll take a picture or something for reference
