gloopy substance in oil filler neck

i have just taken my 69 911 for a spin so i could check the oil... when returning home with the engine at operating temp i popped the engine and unscrewed the oil filler neck cap to see...... a gloopy grey substance... .. should i worry about this?? is it time to change my oil?? i have looked thruogh a couple of books which tells you how to change the oil but does not give examples when or why to change the oil... and why this build up might be there... i know this can sometimes show engine wear??

any info please??

a gloopy creme coloured substance in the filler neck is usually related to moisture in the oil & short journeys. If aircooled cars are only used for short journeys or are not allowed to warm up & run at their operating temp for a good period of time this creme gloop will appear.

How long was your run out in the car ? 1hour + ?

Sounds like water in the oil. On a 'normal' car that would almost certainly mean something expensive but all it's telling you is to change the oil immediately - and if it really is messy I would seriously consider a flushing oil first and then fresh oil (with oil filter changes both times).

hi hot 66... probably only about 20 mins... it is how you have described... cream coloured substance... do you think the car needs a longer run then.. will give me a good excuse...

over winter i have only been doing shorter trips but have tried to start the car as much as possible and run it a little..

so you believe this nothing to worry about so to say??

hi bob was posting at the same time.. so you think that the oil needs changing asap?? should i not run the car when the oil is like this??

what oil would you recommend to use, also what filter should i use and where is the best place to source these items

I'm not overly familiar with the 911 engine, but on other aircooled stuff making sure the crankcase breather is clean and doing its job correctly will also help matters.

I would NOT run the engine for long in that state. You are not running with oil at the moment, but an emulsion which is not what the good doctor intended - Too much risk of inadequate lubrication and subsequent damage! My opinion:- Drain, flush and refill (and new oil filters).

There other threads about 'best oil' so I will leave to the experts to suggest what they would choose.

The good news is that you probably haven't done any damage at this stage.

this won't be helping. If you have just been starting the car & letting it tick over in the garage, this can do more harm than good. You need to warm the oil & motor up by driving it under light loads, then once warm have a good blast (this also makes sure any moisture is evaporated off).

As Bob says, first change the oil & filters. Then only start the car if your going driving, and then make sure you drive it long enough to get the oil temps up

The way you are using the car is not ideal, in fact far from it. As the others say, always get the engine up to operating temperature before parking it up. Short runs will put excess fuel in the oil and not get rid of any water condensation that forms.

yes nick it is a 69s rebuilt to 2.2

get my wheels back from the polishers nxt week so i will be taking up all of your advice.... taking it for a nice long drive.... then a hard spanking on some nice country roads around shropshire
