Cheap flights
My wife asked me what I was doing on the computer the other night.
I told her I was looking for cheap flights.
"I love you!" she said, and then she got all excited. That night we had the most amazing sex ever....
Which is odd because she's never shown an interest in darts before?

Re: Cheap flights
First, take a look at this man....

To the untrained eye he looks to be an American... hair cut, tattoos and the way his shirt fits. BUT, what gives the game away and shows that he is actually a big fat Brit is that he's just about to throw an "arra" into one of these...
We Brits have come along way since we painted ourselves blue...

And chucked spears at the invading forces...

Ooops, sorry ! INVADING FORCES...
Over the years we go ever so good at chucking stuff at the enemy and as time went on the technology developed to a point where, one Friday morning in 1415, in a muddy field in the North of France, at a festival called Agincourt, we kicked some serious French butt...

Ok, it wasn't a festival as such.... more a bloody battle but nevertheless it's a day that is still held true in every Englishmans heart.
Is the joke getting any clearer yet ??
Right then I'll keep going.
As time has gone on it's become less and less practical to amuse ourselves by raining down thousands of armour piercing arrows on the french... so we play darts instead. Here's some darts...

Nice eh ? Tungsten, carbon fibre, come in sets of three so you have more of a chance of actually getting one in the board.
See, they have points at the sharp end like arrows... and here's the crux... like arrows, they have flights at the blunt end to make them go further and straighter Admittedly the flights on darts aren't made of goose feathers but they are flights non the less.
So, there you have it.
Regards, Mike.

Re: Cheap flights
No offense but I know all about Agincourt, & Plessy ( spelling?) the longbow, French Knights, cloth yard arrows,Battle of Hactings 1066AD, etc. However how does "cheap flights" refer to the game of Darts? Are Darts called Flights?

An interesting Agincourt fact that I forgot to mention earlier Mike, is that of the two finger salute. The story goes that when the French captured an English bowman, they would chop off his fingers to prevent him ever pulling a bow string again. At Agincourt, the English bowmen stood and gave the French the two finger salute to show they were ready for the rumble

And... unbelievably... guess who can trace his ancestery all the way back to Baldrick McQueen, the most celebrated of the archers on that battle field 600 years ago....

I know, I can hardly believe it myself. Kinda nice the joke has Porsche roots though.
Oh, and yep, those flappy things on the back of the darts..... are flights... and you can book cheap ones on the internet.
Always happy to help.
Regards as always.
Mike.

Re: Cheap flights
Now that is worth knowing. I have allways wondered what McQueen ment by that salute. Initally I thought he was giving the finger, but it looked wrong, and there was no reason to give it to that other driver. Was the other driver french? I don't remember from the movie. I did know about the cutting of the British Archers fingers.
They did a hell of a job, the automatic guns of their time.I also read that there was a decree, law, that all males of a certain age were supposed to practice every day with the bow in order to build up there strength and skill so England would have a continuous supply of Long Bowmen. Archers were not built in a day.
English history is extremly interesting. Keep it up.

Re: Cheap flights
Good point. I don`t know. Somebody told me that there is actually dialogue in Le Mans but I`m always asleep in the first 30 minutes so I couldn`t tell you.mike curnow wrote: Was the other driver french? I don't remember from the movie.
With a bit of luck, some body`ll be along soon to tell us.
English longbows ? marvelous things. Made of yew, split not cut and with the sapwood, which is creamy white, to the front and the heart wood, which is a glorious rusty red colour to the back . The sapwood stretches, whilst the heartwood is put into compression as the bow is drawn back. As you say, archers trained most of their lives and it`s thought the bows used at Agincourt had a draw weight of up to 180lbs. Every now an then the remains of an archer is dug up on some archeological site... they can tell the archers by the over developed right arm bones and a deformation in the left wrist. It seems there were never any left handed Archers, the left hand being sinister and the work of the devil and all that.
Regards, Mike.

Re: Cheap flights
The RSR and Speedster are in restoration. I tried to load pictures of the 1957 G/T coupe but they would not load. The page showed " upload in progress" , with a moving light, but another window showed " invalid file? ". Tried it several times?

Even Mike, posting photographs can be a bit tricky the first time you do it.. but gets easier as you go on.
Firstly you need to use a website like http://photobucket.com/
Open an account, then download the pictures you want to post on the internet (DDk)
Here are the official DDk picture posting instructions from our Glorious Leader, it's a sticky at the top of the general section.

Good luck,
Mike.

Re: Cheap flights
According to QI the two fingered salute isn't true but what do they know.
