Hidden away sound system

Post by bonerp »

Hi
Looking for some sounds - hidden away and can run it off my phone or usb stick/memory card. This looks a good set up - any other recommendations from you guys?

Think there was a thread on this before somewhere, maybe it was in the original sound deadening thread?
We built a really nice setup for a mate in his karmann coupe which is long since departed.. amp under passenger seat with input from a standard 3.5mm jack in the glovebox (we used a female socket so you can plug just about anything in but you could just have a male plug on a lead), 17cm component speakers (Jbl) with mids firing down into the footwells from under the dash mounted into a custom mdf panel covered in black vinyl to match the interior, and the tweeters firing up into the windscreen and outwards from middle speaker position. Worked really well; highs reflected nicely off the windscreen and towards you, while the mid range speakers used the dash void and footwell space to give decent bass (and overcome road noise from front wheels).
He used a 4-ch amp because we also built a box for a 10" sub which fitted nicely behind the rear seat out of sight, but you could use a 2-ch amp if you weren't bothered.. For the sake of 50 quid thouhg I highly recommend it; makes the sound way better especially in a noisy car where the low frequencies get wiped out..

ah yes just found this from Rich

Same unit lol!

Rich do the speakers pack enough from this little unit? I was thinking about 5 1/4" units.

Nice fibreglass pods too! Been wondering how to keep the backs of the speakers protected.

do you not have space under the dash? we mounted them firing downwards with a board which closed in the underside of the dash. Has the added benefit of covering all the wiring and things up there. also because they're in the car, less susceptible to water and muck

Seems a popular area at the moment..

My wife bought me a 'Retro' style radio, as soon as I passed IVA :) , so I was also wondering where to put the speakers.

I also assume everyone goes for the 'hidden' radio Arial rather drilling a hole in wing for an old style Arial

Hi Paul
It works a treat, but if your looking for something with lots of Bass you will not be happy. I got my speakers from Moss 5 1/2" Oval 40watts each to keep working the little Amp boundaries.

If you put the speakers in the same location as mine, make sure you don't make them to deep as they will foul the front wheels on lock. From memory did mine about 5" deep. I've got 175/65/15 front tyres which clear but if your running 195/65/15 then 4" deep pods would be ample.

Nice little unit that's easy to hide. Check the specs on the amp as not sure if you could use x2 80 watts speakers instead that may sound better???
