help needed: prices of various cars

Hi all,

just your considered views please. I have been thinking about a change in cars - see my 912E thread - but can you help me with a price guide for the following:

1) a later, solid 356, but maybe needing some finishing - if it was solid and MOT'd, I'd be happy.
2) a 356 replica - they seem to range massively, from under 10k to about 25k...but what could you get a 'good' one for - not excellent, but good.
3) a 68 912 targa with a 2.2 911 engine ?! This one is the only 'actual' car I have seen with a view to considering - not for the purists, I know, but it up at £16,995 ( I think)

I know I can check the ads etc...which I am doing, but I want to know actual 'values'....not dream prices.

replica- grossly overpriced generally, personally the best i have seen was 12k on here - I wouldnt bother myself unless it was cheap or free - better off with a 914
last one is a bit specific but a normal 12 is around 12-15k i guess ? with an 11 motor is will be a giggle, but have a narrower resale opportunity.

all prices are for useable but not perfect - in the case of a 356 you really need to join the inner circle - cars for sale are often 'known' rather than advertised - speak to the guys at PRS for some inside info .

I agree with all of Steve's answers, especially about 914s. And beware when buying a 356, they aren't always as solid as they seem!

Genuine opinion - the bit about pulling strong at 125 mph is best taken with a large pinch of salt - looks pretty stock ish (light) on the front so not ideal for max speed testing.

I am not a great fan of the targa - although I like zip out window ones - and curiously, 964 Targas .

If it floats your boat - go for it, I doubt non hybrid 911s of similar vintage will be available for the same price.

Ignoring the other sniffy replies on replicas, 15-16K should get you a decent one. Always plenty available over on www.speedsters.com.
Not a car to keep if you don't have a garage to keep it in though - they seem to quickly deteriate outdoors so price is very much based on condition not age.
With factory built Chesils you'd know pretty much what your getting - just make sure the V5 describes it as a VW Chesil not any old VW.

Don't take offence Simon.
If a speedster is the car you want, then it is a great way to own and enjoy one. The problem with the replicas (it seems to me) is there's so many different ones out there at widely varying prices.
If you're not bothered about owning a speedster specifically then I would think a 914/912 would be a better option.

My first observation (leaving out any opinions on Targas, 912/6 conversions etc) is that I'm immediately suspicious when I look at that engine photo and see that whoever painted the car didn't even bother to remove the engine lid latch. Also the fit and finish of the front bumper/turn signals in the front three-quarter view is indicative of either someone who didn't care when fitting the car up after painting, or of some damage.

For the same sort of money (and probably less) you could get a pretty decent 912, or a very good 914 (plus some change).

Someone has an engine for sale on this board for circa £2k which you could fit. Don't know the logistics of having to register a 'parts' car though. Looks like you could be up and running with a '74' targa for under 10k. Lots of work.
