Over and over again, I inform my clients that they should not buy a project, but rather a complete turnkey toy. Besides the thousands of dollars you save not taking on the project yourself, you will save your stomach lining from all the stress of dealing with all the people you need to help put together an early 911 R Gruppe toy. I have lived this nightmare and don’t recommend it to anyone. Also, no matter how much the seller minimizes the remaining work needed to be done, you can quadruple that estimate…easily! Ok, so you may have to make some compromises on not getting “exactly” what you want when you build your own car; but, in the end, you know I am right.

What I really like about this pretty early 911 hot rod is that it was very well thought out before building. Too often, people build a car based on some pictures and ideas, but don’t really think about what it’s going to be like to live with the final product. The owner of this car really wanted a practical Porsche that could be used for nearly any event. Whether it was a casual driving school at a local track with the Early 911 S group to a weekend wine tour romp with the PCA through the California central coast, this car can truly do it all.

Dave with TREmotorsports.com was given complete control of this project after the owner had tried to do it on his own with no luck. Dave is a magician at taking other people’s failed projects and turning them into gems and this is certainly no exception. TRE has been known to build some of the most tasteful and practical early 911 R Gruppe cars. They also host the Targa California event and know exactly what a fun early Porsche touring car should be. First, they started with a smog-exempt 1974 911chassis that was rust free and straight. Then, the following modifications were made:

3.6L twin-plug engine from a 993. Fresh top-end rebuild with new valves and guides.
(1996 993 Vario ram motor, chipped, drive block bypassed)
Aluminum case 915 gearbox from SC 8:31 ratio (’86 Carrera gearing)
Factory LSD
Short shifter
Racer’s Group adjustable 22mm sway bars
22mm/28mm torsion bars
Turbo tie rod kit
Elephant racing poly bronze bushings
Raised spindle front Bilstein shocks
Re-valved/rebuilt shocks to match torsion bars
Front strut brace
Corner balanced and aligned
Boxster 4-piston brakes all four corners with cross-drilled rotors and Porterfield pads (no squeaks)
OEM vacuum booster: all lines, pedals, linkage, etc.
Stainless steel brake lines
Dual oil coolers: front bumper mount in series with passenger side cooler
(In bumper to bumper traffic, with a/c on, 100 degrees out, it never gets higher than 200 F, Comes back down to 180-190 F as soon as you start moving along)
Trunk oil cooler duct
New Michelin Pilot Cup tires
Custom 3-piece TRE 9x17 and 11x17 Fuch-style wheels with RSR finish
Correct butt-welded Turbo rear flares
Fuel cell (17 gallon 911 cell with sender and fender fill)
Modified exhaust system
(late exchangers with custom muffler. It is quiet enough for cruising, but comes alive under hard load. 3rd tip hidden on driver side…we call this the Laguna Seca exit, as we have caps for the main tubes, but it may pass as is w open RSR tubes)
Modern A/C that blows extremely cold
Welded roll cage with removable door bars for easy street use.
(extensions to rear shock towers, removable sidebars, and removable knee bar…excellent for a tall driver. SFI padding)
Front and rear FG IROC bumpers
Fiberglass front fenders
Custom IROC rear tail to accommodate A/C system
Correct driver side mirror
Sunroof delete
Custom headliner insert
Black RSR style carpeting
RSA door panels with map pockets

H4 headlamps and Euro lenses

This Porsche comes with a very nice pair of Sparco Evo seats. The seats in the photographs are TRE “GT 40” style with deep wells and grommets. These seats were custom build by TRE and are great for seat support on the track or comfort on long drives. We can custom install these seats to tailor fit the buyer’s body type and seating preference. These seats are available for an additional fee. The Sparcos can be used as a credit towards the TRE seat purchase.

Also, the owner has an extra set of wheels for the future owner to use for race-rubber, winter tires, or whatever they may need. Specific details, photos, and pricing will be available shortly.

*Warranty includes all parts and labor on the drivetrain only. The car must be delivered (at owner's cost) to TRE Motorsports. TRE will determine if damage is from any misuse or neglect and will only cover repairs due to failure from faulty parts or assembly. TRE will be the final determination of warranty coverage.

California registration paid through April, 2012.
