Good point Disco, to pay £3000 until resolved.
I think Trading Standards could be more useful threat than court. My experience of the small claims process isnt great. A roofing firm in town were judged in my favour to pay back the money paid for poor repairs that resulted in further damage. That was 2 years ago and still waiting!

15 litres of primer AND 12 litres of paint????? Is the body an inch thicker!!!!???
There is no way they would get a penny over the maximum £2500 off me. Once you have paid they could tie this situation up in loads of litigation and make it impossible for you to get your money back.
Take a witness, pay him the £2500. If he refuses to give you the car, call the police. Make sure you have all paperwork originally given to you.
Also advise a solicitor asap.
Would be good to know who this is, i need a few jobs doing and i have two friends looking to build soon.
Dont protect someone who is taking advantage to put it mildly
thanks

So basically they have put on 15 litres of primer, 12 litres of paint and inc thinners and hardeners as they have quoted 20 liters of laquer, that makes 47 litres of paint gone onto your vehicle, thats enough to paint 5 double decker buses!!!
Deffinatley tell them you are going to take the car to get it analysed to see the paint thickness which will tell how much paint they have actually put on.
Dont pay the £4k as you will never get it back. Get some legal advice before going down and quote it.

As they the colour mix themselves, you cant see an invoice for the yellow from a supplier can you? Its your word against theirs, so a paint specialist would be an option - but an additional cost. Ask to see original invoices for the other materials. That would only prove they had bought the items, not neccesarily that they used them on your car though. Small claims didnt work that well for me with a paint dispute even with the specialist I used. I would definitley query the amount of paint they claim to have used, and maybe speak to a couple of the trade guys on here to see how much they would put on your car.
It sounds dodgy so you will have to play hardball with them I reckon.

I might try the tactile way first
Adam is hopefully looking at some prices of materials etc.... Using the points from your guys, ie enough paint to repaint 5 buses etc, and copying this forum thread (if you all don't mind - references to DDK etc have been removed), and eventually getting the paint thickness measured, I will send this onto them for review before i collect on Friday.
If it gets nasty I will just call the cops.

I meant, that with 47 litres of paint ( undercoat, topcoat and laquer)
(Thats over 10 gallons) It would be pretty thick and would take a lot of drying/curing.
I would be very suprised if they had used that much though, Im trying to picture 10 gallons poured over the surface area of a speedster

yeah i know what you mean with picturing that much paint!
I have now written to them and been very polite so I'll see what they come back with.
thanks to everyones input - even the 'send round the boys' suggestions
I'll let you know where we go next. Might need to borrow a few of you yet
