No - a std 'L' came with an 'L' engine !

Engine type no 901/06 (manual) or 901/07 (Sportomatic) 130bhp - equivalent year's 'T' had a 901/03 or 901/13 110 bhp engine.

Since the 'S' was not imported into the US in '68, they got the 'L' model which was basically an 'S' with a lower spec engine.

However, if this is a Factory-supplied Rallye car there were a number of options available & without seeing the Kardex it's not possible to say what the exact specification was.

US and europe were different in 68 due to issues getting the S engine accepted in US. Andy has given a good summary of the US models which was basically the S car (but with an L engine) badged as an L and the T. Europe had all three true models T, L and S for a year.

In europe, from an engine point of view, the L was basically the 67 standard engine carried on. The progression from 67 to 68 was 67S->68S, 67 standard->68L and a new lower powered engine the 68T introduced.

Because the 67 standard engine was already homologated (as well as the S) Porsche was able to produce the 68L Rallye engine, the key criteria being the heads had to stay the same as the L (including valve and port sizes) but other bits such as cam etc could be upgraded. You will see rallies where some of the cars were S and some were L. Different classes within the event I think. The L Rallye had the S instruments which are different to the standard L instruments. The Rallye engine was type 901/30 and made 150BHP.

In 68 Porsche decided to homologate the T and S and used the T as the basis of the T/R from then on.

That was my understanding. The 'L' was homologated for grp2 and the 'S'/'T' for GT. The 'T' was a bit cheeky because it was homologated with it's lower weight then spec'd up anyway.

The L engine was referred to as '2000R' I think. 130bhp engine with 's' cams, carbs, b&p. 150bhp in street spec, 160 bhp with race exhaust.

So what would a factory '68 rally car be worth restored?

To build the correct engine and gearbox, restore the "partially modified" (bit vague) bodyshell, suspension etc would cost plenty.

So if it cost circa £100k to restore, would the finished article be worth around £150k (roughly break even point)?

Rare car if it was originally fitted with a factory 901/30 engine but then that is of course missing.
