Good work John. Where have you bought the panels from, OPC? any difficulties?
I found using the jig Lee made up for the 356 invaluable for transporting the shell around, if you hang onto that one mate once you're finsihed with it I'm sure it'll find another 2.2E to carry

Hi James I hope mine isn’t giving you heart failure you already been through the mill with the A.

I have bought Porsche panels from OPC, most were available and quite reasonable. For example I bought both rear quarters about 2 years ago in anticipation of the work the car was going to require and they were about £1100 each inc vat, they are now just under £800 each inc vat. The parts that were not available from Porsche have been bought from Roger Brays. But things like battery boxes were cheaper from Porsche than pattern parts from Rogers

For me this is the first stage over. Barry now has the shell and all the magic will start very soon.





I now have all the parts that have been removed off the car to go through and clean, repair and replace. Barry has the hard work.

Having had another look through this thread it amazes me that John's car used to look nothing like as bad as it does now. It's surprising (to me) what lurks under the surfaces. At least Barry's got something to work to - unlike a previous build up using what amounted to a VIN plate and little else

It's very true. John's car looked like one of the better ones. It is one of the better ones. And yet...
It shows why seemingly identical cars can sometimes trade for less than £20k and yet others make over £75k. It does perplex some buyers.
We know why (it's those restoration costs) but unless you look carefully....

Yep it is frightening what lurks beneath. My car has been repaired a number of times in the past but I suppose almost all early 911's will have had repairs in the past to keep them on the road. Stoneguard filler and paint can, and in my case has, hidden a whole host of horrors. I suppose you can never know how good or bad your car is until its stripped to a bare shell. It least once mine is done I will know exactly where my car is (condition wise). I will just have to make sure it stays that way.

It's great to have the car here: at the moment it's being intensely dehumidified, as we ended up rinsing all of the road-salt from it. Seemed to work very well, and a day or so on, and the car's just about bone-dry again.

I have to say that John has been super-super organised, and the whole project has been given the very best start. Every item on my 'parts' and 'panels' lists has been supplied, and the way that everything had been packed into the van was amazing: very well protected indeed.

The timing of the visit did allow a peak at the current project during it's last few days, so John was able to see where his car should be in three or four months time. He didn't hastily jump back in the van (with car) and return northwards, so I guess he wasn't too horrified at the treatment I've been dishing out.

Anyway, all being well before we hit the Christmas break, we should get a glimse of the car on the jig, and see what we're looking at .

I have posted this already in the general section but thought I would also post it here just to tie it into my restoration thread.

Just to update this thread, DDK came up trumps again after a number of members helped me unearth a little more info on my car. Minster very kindly sent an email on my behalf to the Swiss importer and they sent back a photo of the data card for my car.



It confirms that the car was indeed Swiss delivered and came with 2 options 404 antiroll bars front and rear and 440 a radio loud speaker and aerial.

It lists the tyres as 185-70-15, would this be standard? or should an E have 14 inch wheels?

It also states that the car was delivered to Schiller who I think was a Porsche dealer from Geneva. Heinz Schiller had a racing career and competed in a single GP in 1962 finishing 20th, he also raced on occasion for the Porsche factory team in various cars including 904's 550's and 356 Carrera's.

Quite cool. I will try to do some more digging and see if I can unearth some Swiss owners.

I had my first progress report with pictures from Barry this weekend, Barry looks like he’s made great inroads already.

The front panel was deemed too poor to keep and the suspension pan was not in the correct place so is also being replaced.









The window apertures have been repaired previously and Barry has said that they are the worst he has seen so far, not sure if I should be proud of that, anyway they all need repairs to the corners so will be sorted in time.








So already on the mend

What's not clear from the pictures above is the flanges that attach the front pan to the inner wings were getting ratty, having already had two (the original plus the first replacement) front pans welded to them.

Also the area around the front bumper mounts (front two inches of both inner wings), and the leading three inches of the front inner wing bases were all a bit messy.

Therefore all of these areas have been replaced, hence the shiny bits on that 'under battery box / bumper mount area' pic. BTW, I've got a simple little fixture for punching in the front inner wing seal quadrant (for want of a better word) recess (just above the bumper mount reinforcement).

Another update at the end of the week .
